I got a box from alaska - quail

That should do great Miss!! I need to find something similar to that for myself. Yep just brood them in the rubber-maid. They will be ready to be off the heat in 6-8 weeks. If not sooner.

If I keep them in the house about 2 weeks can I move them to the new hutch/pen and add heat to it or is being under a covered 3 sided front open barn stall too much exposure even with heat?

That would work....they wont need much heat then especially if it is as hot at your place as it is at mine.

How hot IS it there, Miss P?
I tested my babies at 3 weeks... turned off the lamp for a little while and watched them. If they quickly moved to a huddle, I put the lamp back on, though I may reduce the wattage a little. If they don't seem to be chilled and go about their business, then I leave it off. But... I'm sure it's much cooler here at 45-60°F than it is in your world right now.

Your hutch is perfect...

You won't have to keep your quail under lamps very long...

Maybe the first week, or until they start to feather out. I could use one day like that to dry things up... seems like we've been raining for a week now. Everything is soup.

Ours, too... what do you do when it's like that?
Sorry... off topic...

All I can do it throw down some hay.

I had been letting them out in the feild to help with the problems of mud and muck.

For the first time in 4 years we had a dang ole beagle in our feild chasing the sheep. Had my ducks or geese been out I am sure I would have lost them. For now I have to keep them shut in.

The pen is a big mess and their feathers are dirty.

I'll have to see if I can locate a good source of hay...

So, back to the quail... how many have hatched so far?
