My rooster is about 6 months old now and so far he's been a pretty good boy. He has a couple girlfriends and has figured out how to play the game "piggyback" just fine.
Yesterday I cleaned out the coop and run like I do every week and spent some time with them giving them special treats, mealworms and some other seed mix. No problems at all.
Today I noticed that a couple of the plastic rake tines snapped off the rake I was using yesterday in their run and I wanted to get them out. I decided to first go get an apple and slice it up for a little treat but mainly to see how they liked apples because I never gave them any before.
As soon as I slipped into their run, the rooster ran over to me and in mid-air attacked the slice of apple that I was offering him. He pecked at the apple but it wasn't exactly a friendly peck, more like...."I killlllllllll yoouuuuuuuu" peck! Then he flew at me again, trying to flog me, and then he did it again!
I remembered reading here on the forum on how to humiliate an attacking rooster by picking him up by his legs and parading him in front of his ladies. So I grabbed his scrawny legs and let him dangle upside down as I walked all around the run, back and forth in front of his girls, and carrying him like he was a pocketbook! I think I even was whistling, "Walk This Way"....
Then just to make sure I gave him enough punishment, I threw his little butt into the coop and closed the door. Sort of like a "chicken timeout".
He went nuts! So did his girls!
I let him back out as I was exiting the run and I swear he had a snear on his face....I bet I'm in for it tomorrow.
