I got flogged!

I just chased the neighbors rooster around the yard with my arms out and kept kicking him in his butt... not hard to hurt him, but enough... He has not flogged me since. Of course i was sure I was going to have a heart attack... This chick aint used to running. LOL

I wish my mother in law could learn a lesson from you ladies. She is TERRIFIED of her little red sex link rooster. She wont even go into the coop if the roo is in the pen, she has an egg grabber to get the eggs :/ I hear all of these horror stories about how this rooster chases her around the yard and how he chases the lawnmower! Sometimes I don't know if the story is true or not; I never had him attack me when I chicken-sit for her, in fact he'll run in the opposite direction when he sees me coming. I don't know why she wont get rid of him if he bothers her so much. Oh well, not my problem I guess.

Roosters are astute readers of body language (their social heirarchy is based on it). They can see if you are afraid of them, which is probably why he attacks your MIL and nobody else.

Another method you can use to intimidate a rooster is just putting your arms out as wide as they'll go, and slowly walking straight at him. He'll stand his ground a moment, decide you're serious, and then backup.... back up....back up... give up.

Just keep walking him around the yard until he stops turning to stand and face you. He'll eventually say to himself 'gosh, I can't beat that rooster's feather display. Dang it', and cede dominance to you.

I generally caution against violent methods (even gentle hitting or booting), because some roosters seem to become unhinged and start doing sneak attacks after that.

Our Welsummer roo, RooD, flogged me twice yesterday. After the second time I grabbed our net and went after him. The chase went from inside the barn, outside, back to barn, out again and ended in the barn. By the time we were outside the second time DH had joined me in the chase. RooD got so frantic that he flew into our Brahma pen. Brutus, our Brahma roo took up the chase and cornered RooD inside the coop. DH picked him up by the feet, praising Brutus for his good job, and the Shamed Roo Parade started. DH carried him all around the barn and outside for all to see. I then held him for a short time just to remind him we both were bigger roos than he. DH finished by placing him on the ground and holding his head down. RooD spent the rest of the time that we were with the chickens in a far corner of the barn. I ended up with scratches on one wrist and bruises on the opposite hand.

I warned DH that this was the last time I would be flogged. I have a back injury and walk with a cane. Note above, the "chase" on my part was slow, steady and relentless. Next time he looks at me wrong RooD is crockpot fodder. He is a beautiful rooster and is good with the hens, and we planned to breed him with our EE hens for olive green eggs. We can scratch that plan and use our Welsummer hens with our EE roo.

If at any time we had been aggressive with him I would not be surprised by this behavior. During both attacks yesterday I was filling waterers, which I do nearly every day. DH told me RooD had flogged him last week and he had grabbed him by his feet and carried him around. No attack on DH since. DH was filling feeders at the time of the attack. BTW, after his second attack on me I did the arms flapping, and he just kept coming at me. He was not intimidated at all.

I have noticed that RooD has moved down the pecking order of our five roos that share the common barn area. He may think he is working his way back up by attacking us? Who knows?

I better see this

when I go to the barn today, and not this

I parade my naughty roosters around as well. I craddle them like a baby and let the hens see what I have. When ever I do that the poor guy walks away with his tail down and hides fro th ladies for a while. I swear the hens laugh at the roosters when I do that!

Love the Roo Stories!

I have a GLW Roo named Owl, he has done the dance for me, and I informed him that I was not interested and to move along. He has flogged my DH & both my girls & the neighbor girl. I go out and follow him around the yard and will corner him & have the Crock Pot Talk/Come To Jesus Meeting. A little over a month ago, I brought home a Bantam Roo that was being picked on by a Frizzle Roo. The day I brought thiis Bantam home, he fought with my Silkie Roo, who is a sweetheart (now he is hormonal), and intimidated my GLW Roo, to the point that he would chase Owl across the yard and away from the hens. Owl hurt his leg a week after the new roo arrived, and I hurt mine, in a hole the dogs dug. So we were both limping at the same time. Owl would isolate himself from everyone, I was taking him food & water during the day, and I would help him up onto the roost at night.
I have always been able to pet Owl, but since the intro of the other roo, he became my best bud. Before our foot accident, Owl & I watched a thunder storm on the back deck for almost a hour, I sat the beside him and shared some bread I had. After the accident, I could stoke his back, scratch under his waddle, he let me feel his legs & feet and did not fuss or try to peck at me. His tail feathers were always down, and he just seemed depressed. I found a new home for that Little Red Devil last Monday, and Owl is now back to his old self. He is crowing again, loving his girls again, he leg is almost back to normal, and so is mine.

And he became a Daddy 2 weeks ago.

This is my Owl (He also likes to come into the house when I open the sliding glass door)

Ok, unless my big bad (not so much) rooster decides to put me on notice again, this probably will be my last installment about having a flogging rooster.

Today I decided to go into the run again and see how things will go since it's been a couple of days since the last rodeo.

Thought I'd really taunt him some more by going into the run wearing shorts this time. Those blinding white legs will surely set him off!

I cleaned and filled their water fount, added more feed into their feeder, and when I was finished I unfolded the lawn chair to visit with them for awhile like I usually do.

Big bad (not so much) roo calmly walked over and stood about 3 ft. from me and froze in position. He stood perfectly still.......giving me the stink eye. For a long time.
I gave it back.
For a long time.

The End
(hopefully)
