Mice are carriers for cholera, idk how susceptible chickens are to it but it will kill a whole flock of turkeys in no time (at least a flock in confinement, never had a free range flock)
Yes, and at least where I live, first you see mice, then rats, then snakes. All with their diseases and dangers. I'd rather have a tended cat colony than live in fear of disease or predation by those animals. A cat colony may also repell skunks, possum, and racoons through just their presence (if there are enough cats) tomcats scent mark their territory and supposedly the raccoon, possum, and skunk stay away because of that. Though to be realistic only the largest meanest tomcats stand a chance against possum and coons. A lady once had her small momma cat and kittens torn apart by coons. She found their bodies in the morning, it looked like momma tried to defend her kittens when the coon found the nest. She then took a huge mean tomcat i trapped last year, and didnt know what to do with as he was viscous. She now reports that she has found dead baby coons since he moved in and she wants more like him. Lol. the 3 I trapped and sent off for neutering today are all too young and small or I'd give her 1 or 2 of them.
Ever since I adopted my original 2 mousers I have had few problems with pests. I am actually spending less spaying/neutering and feeding the cats than I was on poison. I am tired of new cats moving in and hurting my girls though. That's why I gave that huge tomcat away, he forced my Patches to mate a month after her spay and her girl parts were hanging outside her body! (I rushed her to the vet and she is fine now) I am just glad I didn't have to put a bullet in that tomcat and that his meanness is being useful for someone else.
