So I got 3 chickens from my co-worker, a large heavy rabbit hutch, water and food dishes and layer mash. Brought everything home Friday night at dusk and decided to concentrate on the details tomorrow.
Well hubby seemed to forget that not everyone has Sat. off and he turned off the alarm. ( I need to be at work by 8 a.m. on Sat.) Luckily though I seem to have a NEW alarm clock, one with feathers! Romeo, my new rooster, woke me up at 6 a.m. on the button crowing! I had to work until 3 and hubby had stuff to do. So the chickens had to stay cramped in a huge, heavy rabbit hutch until we both got home. Then hubby and I had a date. The date involved bonding ( or bitching! ) over the construction of a temporary pen with a roof to keep the chickens locked up until they get used to where the food comes from and learn to stay here. We finally got the chore finished a little after 6 and the chickens were quite eager to investigate their new digs. I thought that they would be way too upset from their ordeal to lay eggs but as we were setting things up, I found 2 brown eggs! So it seems that I am forgiven. I gave them a hearty dinner of layer mash with a bucket of soaked dog kibble and diced cantalope as a treat and they attacked it when I gave them space. They definitely know what treats are! Only the rooster has a name, "Romeo". I'm thinking of naming the Barred Rock hen "Confetti" and the little red hen with the attitude about being handled "Spice". Grandpa would have LOVED Romeo! He's such a handsome devil!

P.S. Please tell me if you are able to open the pics.
