I don't really care if they see me taking eggs. If a chicken is in the nesting box I leave them be. If a hen is brood I push them away and gather the eggs (though that has to cjange, as I know have rooster and I want to raise chicks).

If there's a girl on the nest making eggs when I check for them, I praise her and pet her a bit. It seems to have paid off, because when I had a broody over the summer, she would let me candle her eggs and check on them.

Occasionally I will break up a spat between a pullet and a hen if they're squabbling over a nest box. I have a hen who is egg-crazy and will act like a hall monitor. She's not even laying right now, because she's molting - but she still wants to guard the nest boxes.

futuregreen, congrats on the egg and being the crazy chicken person in the house. I have this same role in my household. My wife also says I get road rage while I am still in the parking lot. Oh well maybe they should get off the sidewalk if they don't like my driving..

I always tell my chickens they did a good job when I take the eggs, so they don't mind, lol.
