I got some meat rabbits!

I'm going to pick up a new Rex doe or two tomorrow evening. We have several rex does now but none are pedigreed and I picked up a gorgeous black otter buck a while back who I'd like to get show babies out of. These girls have pretty nice pedigrees too so hopefully I'll get something nice. It's been a long time since I've shown rabbits, I think I was about 11 the last time, but I wouldn't mind getting back into it. Our rabbits are mainly for meat but I like to focus on purebreds because selling live bunnies for show or breeding stock brings in a lot more money than meat.

HI guys sorry for posting i know this thream is alittle old,BUT i just got a black flemish doe and shes supposedly bred, Im pretty excited, Im building a hutch for her, how big should It be for a flemish, I used to breed new zealands and these are quite bigger lol

Just another stepping stone towards my, "screw the world" lifestyle I found an ad on CL for a guy getting out of his meat rabbit venture and ended up with 3 bred Californian does, 1 younger Cali doe, a Cali buck, and 3 younger NZ cross does.

My original plan was a Cali trio and a NZW trio, but the lady I am getting my NZs from won't have my babies for another couple of months. I jumped on this deal figuring it would get me started and any I don't like I can cull and keep a few to breed until I can get better breeding stock, but these girls look good. However, one of the does was bred sooner than he told us and kindled the 2nd night we had them...on the wire. I managed to save 2. So in less than 48 hours I went from 0 rabbits to 8 rabbits to 10 rabbits...and I still have to get my NZs!

Rabbits seem to be a lot more work than chickens, for sure, but I think it will be sooo worth it!

Hopefully when you get them you'll love them enough to not kill them.

My little girl asked me today if I could get some rabbit eggs to hatch, must be the Easter thing, you know, eggs. Anyway I explained to here they didn't come from eggs, that they found them under cabbage leafs, LOL. Does anyone have any rabbits around Dallas TX for sale? I want to start raising them, just having a tough time finding a deal on any. Also does anybody have any input on what breads are best for meat.

OH new ZEAlands by far!! Also Silver fox, champagne diargents are also great for meat.....I wish you were in ct I have an amazing line of New Zealand Whites I got from an awesome breeder near me.......at alittle over three months the butcher out at 3 lbs cleaned up.... I feed them pellets and also pick them a huge variety of grasses and weeds and they grow like weeds lol

X2 would anyone raise a bunch of MEAT rabbits and NOT kill them? They are raised for food! That is what they are raised for. Of course you don't kill your breeding stock, but just like cattle, sheep and meat chickens, someone has to kill and process the meat we eat. It's the cycle of life! If someone wants a pet, buy a pet rabbit, not a meat rabbit and don't criticize those of us who grow our own food, Please!

I prefer the size and taste of New Zealand Meat rabbits. Second choice would be Californians, but they are a little smaller. I have 15 does and 2 bucks, with 10 to 13 in a litter. I breed them every other month, from October to June. I skip August, because of the heat. Hot weather is not easy on pregnant or nursing does! At 12 weeks, a 5 1/2 # fryer will dress out at 3 - 3 1/2 # I sell most young at 6 weeks as breeding stock to people who want to grow their own healthy food, as they are a very good source of protein and much cheaper to raise than chickens. Feed to meat ratio is about 3:1. I sell 6 week olds for $12 each, and usually only have less than a dozen a month, left to process for the freezer. I have never had a tough rabbit at 12 weeks, but you must let them rest, refrigerated, for 3 days, before freezing, so rigger passes and the meat becomes tender. Too bad you live so far away!
