Hi, I have (8) 12 week old buff orpingtons. I have been letting them free range in the back of our wooded .5 acre for a few days for a few hours each day. Well, this morning they were out for about 1/2 hr. When I went to check on them, one of them (who I suspected might be a rooster but everyone who saw the picture on byc said no) started to seriously yell at me. I had Mrs. Cuddleworth on my back, she always jumps up to say hello. Not sure if it was directed at me or her but she was answering back the whole time. It was like bak, bak, bak, bak, bak, BAAAAAK and was really loud. I picked her (him?) up until he quieted but then the noise would start again.

Any ideas what might have been going on?

I agree, could have been a warning. It could also have been simple jealousy.

Especially since you said she quit when you picked her up. Also, the one on the ground could have been calling to the other one about how to get up there (kind of like when they are separated) and then when you picked it up, you solved the problem.

I think you may be right. I got yelled at like that by one of my neighbor's hens while I was uncoiling and recoiling a hose in my yard. I think she thought it was a snake!

lol Mine do it everytime they see my dog but that's kind of expected since he is another animal

But the rooster woke me up this morning with his warning call thing - not a crow- but what the OP was asking about.. it drove me NUTS!
