I had NO idea!!!

Technically high fructose corn syrup is a natural occurring product, however in nature it occurs in very low levels and is extracted. Of course it's not good for you since only your liver can metabolize it unlike other sugars. Same with the growth factors. We all have it, just at lower levels than when it is "added", and cows will still produce hormones even if it is not added. Breed for cows that produce more milk and they will naturally have more hormones in them becuase that is one of the basis behind their ability to produce milk in the first place. Lots of things are linked to cancer, the sun many love, the oxygen we breathe, and the process of digesting food. If we all only lived till we were 50 and still died of "wasting away disease" we wouldn't have nearly as much diagnosed cancer in the world. And other than the 100% juice not being 100% of the juice stated on the main label, isn't apple juice still juice?

I figure keep things in moderation, don't down a 20 ounce starbucks caramel frappuccino for breakfast, have a soda with your lunch, certainly don't eat a catfish out of the Willamette river filled with PCB/heavy metals, or eat too much tuna which often contain mercury, and life will be good. Those "shocking" things don't seem all that shocking really...

Well, I'll keep having my Seattle Espresso (local chain that beats Starbucks by about a million miles) cappucinos. However, to my specs, they make it with whole milk and very dry (lots of foam, little or no unfoamed milk). I don't like sweetened coffee, but if I did, I would use the natural cane sugar as does DH). Also don't want flavour other than a sprinkling of cinnamon or nutmeg on top.

BTW, I only drink a very few sodas per week--sometimes none, and my choice is seltzer.

Sorry to laugh at a serious subject but BOY doesn't that just sum up those slides.

Actually... that's a pretty darned good analogy for this topic. Many already knew about these things and still bought them. Many will see it and continue to buy it. They reckon the wedgie is worth the rush.

Just like the .50c/lb chicken that isn't as good as home grown (whether you know it or not) is worth the 'sacrifice' because of the price. Of course many have no choice, not knocking since we're in that group, just saying... another wedgie to pull on.

Shocking, but not surprising. I've gained a couple of pounds over the past year from my preferred drinks too. While I only drink black coffee, water or beer and NEVER touch soda or sugar drinks, I'm guessing the beer is the problem. But I keep telling myself it's relaxing and healthy.(er)...

I think everybody would like sugar better if we called it "cane extract". Then we'd all feel good about how natural it is. It doesn't matter how much you have to do to process something, it's still natural. In fact, the more difficult it is to get that "agave extract" the more natural-food people like it.

If it takes a million steps to get it, you end up having to call it "essence of [_________]" and thats when people really go crazy with how great it must be for you. Unless it's really easy and you can get a lot of it, then it's DEADLY and should be avoided at all cost, especially to your children. Like anything corn-related. Oh wait. Unless you OD on it, everything in corn is GOOD for you! All of it. You can almost live on corn alone, it's so good for you. Alas, not enough protein. Every animal in your farm can eat it. DEADLY!!!!

Everything in moderation. A 20oz. soda is way more than I can drink and I have been practicing drinking my whole life! How many servings in that 20oz soda? They forgot to mention that in the panic-article. 3? 4? If I divide panic, by 3, I get... carry the one.... not panic, but more like... pfff. Maybe as much as ... meh.

Sheesh.

We should go back to panicking about our cats eating all the songbirds, in America.

You'd think overeating would be an easy thing to avoid. Heck, even our homeless are obese. Maybe it's just around here.

I hear you Jet. My BIL is a firm believer in only eating potatoes and corn as his sole source of 'veggies'. It's a wonder that man hasn't got scurvy. It really is amazing how many (including me on some subjects I'll admit) keep their heads buried when they don't want to face the reality of something.

That article is suspect if you ask me. I really question their data, the way it was collected, and how they arrived at their conclusions.

BST isn't good for cows but I have seen no evidence it is linked to cancer or anything else. Actually, if you read enough you will find that EVERYTHING is linked to cancer. Including distilled water.

My hubby is like your BIL but he only eats potatoes, bread and peanut butter along with plain chips. Been that way for over 42 years, not ever had green veggies, fruits or meat of any kind. I think he will outlast me, that's for sure!

If it's so good for you...how come, no matter how much you chew it, it always comes out whole?! OR, if you eat alot of it...well, you know what happens.

Don't go knockin' my taters...

I LOVE corn. I was raised on the stuff from Bixby, OK. The BEST corn on the planet.
