I hate coyotes

A coyote ate one of our ducks and a chicken while we were away last week. Normally they don't free range at night, only during the day, but we were out of town and my 71-year-old mom was housesitting and she couldn't shoo the ducks into the coop each night. So first a white pekin disappeared, then the lone chicken that we had wandering about. (It had been severly pecked while in the coop, so we didn't want it to be alone with our flock of chickens while we were away. It would have definitely been killed had we left it with them.)

Well...I say coyote, but I don't have absolute proof of the predator. What do you guys think? The white pekin duck was six months old, so full grown in size, practically. She was already laying giant eggs. Seems like she'd be too big for a hawk, although we have those around here, too.

I have seen two coyotes in broad daylight in recent weeks, so they're definitely around. The first was on our street, about a half mile from our property, and the second was on an ajacent road, about 3/4's of a mile from our property. Both definitely within running distance. I'm not used to seeing them in the daylight. Usually they're seen more around dusk.

We live in a rural area filled with farmland and trees.

As for the carcass, we found the area where the struggle began, and it went on for about 200 feet, with feathers strewn about in three main areas. In the final area, near the fence, there was also, strangely, a duck egg laying there. That's where my husband found the breast plate and rib cage, shiny and clean of any meat, as well as a feathered wing still intact.

Sound like a coyote to you guys? Or something else?

Coyotes have been so bad around here (south central KY) that we've had them out in broad daylight taking critters all over.

I had one take a chick two weeks back while my husband and neighbor worked on the backyard deck - he came out of the woods into the backyard and snatched it right there - unfortunately the gun was in the house, too far to get it fast enough.

Same neighbor has called me every day the last three days - sees this coyote (his dogs scare it off) and it goes into our woods and so he calls me to have the gun ready. I have yet to see it, but I am really getting tired of this critter.

meri, that's really bold of the coyote in your area. I'm sorry it got your chick. that's sad. you're going to chickenstock, right? we'll get to meet you there. I'm looking foward to putting faces with names.

fordmommy, luckily, I haven't seen wolves or bears here. do you have them in your area? I still love wolves...since they haven't killed any of my animals yet. But once again, I can easily see where I'd start to hate them if they ate my animals.

I'm looking forward to meeting so many people I only know on here.

the forecast on the louisville news says a 20% chance on saturday. is the local forecast in your area giving a higher chance of rain? we'll be there short of an all-day thunderstorm. a few rain showers won't keep us away. and neither would the thunderstorm, were it not for my fear of lightning!

...so yeah, about a 20% chance.

We have a chance of rain everyday for the next 7 days, and sometimes it does rain, and sometimes it won't. Like yesterday, it was cloudy, looked like rain - we got nothing all day. Today we have some rain, but it has already let up quite a bit, and it might even turn sunny this afternoon.

Yesterday it was a little windy, that usually means rain the next day. I hope Friday isn't windy

Yes well I didn't like Coyotes before and now I really hate them. I lost my big beautiful male Mallard today. All that was left of him was a few feathers and and his feet. Found those about 20 feet from the pen. I found paw prints around the pen and unfortunately a section of the fence that overlapped and was not secured well enough. The coyote must have pushed through just enough to grab "Howard" when he was defending his ladies. No paw prints inside the pen.

I have seen many coyotes in our yard over the last year, but they haven't made much of an attempt to get into the pen. I guess when I moved it this past Saturday, I didn't do a good enough job. So it is my fault he is gone. I have only had my ducks for 4 months and raised all 4 (now 3) of my ducks from hatch.

I collected as much of what was left of Howard and laid him to rest : (

Thanks for listening
