I Hate Dachshunds!!!

As I see it, you have two options. Obviously, your brother has no interest in the dog other than "having" a dog so you could continue training this dog, especially on basic commands like sit, stay, come and leave it (the last being the most important). Any dog, regardless of breed, will chase and kill prey animals (including chickens). It is inherent in their nature, moreso in some rather than others. Dont hate the dog or the breed for behaving on instinct. Training stubborn breeds can take some time but can solve lots of problems. Your second option is either confining the dog or making sure the dog is on a strong run. I understand you live on a farm and if the dachsund has been hunting vermin for you, then in his eyes a freerange chicken is fair game. I would inspect your runs and coops to make sure there are no other holes from which the chickens can escape or critters can get in. If your brother cant be a responsible "dog owner" then it is up to you to fill that role. Good luck.

The Daschund was bred to go down in a hole after Badgers. Fearless little buggars. They are a head strong dog, but smart . They can be trained, but you MUST have a lot of pacience! Stubborn is one of their strongest qualities. Good luck.

Wow...I am speachless...I have had dachshunds all my life and I have three now....I have never "trained" them to not mess with my chickens...they just dont....they have never bothered any kind of animal I have had...they used to play with my ferret...please dont bash the breed b/c of one dog...they are a wonderful breed and I will always have a dachshund in my life...probably more than one

they are hunters, its what they were bred to do...if you dont want to take the time to train it or your brother doesnt then please find the dog a loving home...there are plenty of dachshund rescues that would take him...I can give you some of them if you want.

I think it's time to have a weenie roast!

Once a dachshund shows interest in going after a animal it's normally impossible to train them not to. I love dachshunds and use to breed them and had over 25 adults and lots of puppies but I will say they are the most hard headed little

Any dog that has killed a chicken will keep doing so unless it is trained not to. If the owner has no interest in the dog then I would sell it or get rid of it, or put it in a dog pin.

I have two of them. They do not bother the chickens NOW, but the elderly one killed three until I worked with him A LONG TIME. I do believe the best work was performed by my Cayuga drake and dominant rooster, once they were old enough to kick Zorro's butt, though. He can walk through a mass of chickens now, but he has his tail low and his head down, not inviting any attention.

The problem at first was the chickens were smaller, then, and they ran when he chased them. Now he doesn't dare chase any. I was worried when I added bantams to the flock, but Zorro had learned chickens were not to be harassed by then. Whew!

My other dachshund simply observed the instruction (which sometimes included chaining Zorro when I worked in the yard) and heard all the loud NO!s and other instructions, so he simply AVOIDS the chickens. Literally. If there is a chicken in front of the front door when he's outside, he goes around the long way to get into the house.

Hmm...Thank you for all the comments.

Many of you have very strong feelings about Dachshunds it seems, and YES I know it was MY fault! Thank you to those who reinforced that assumption.

Its very much a shame that a dog has to be locked up and on a leash 24/7 but it is what it is! I will not settle for a dog who destroys my livestock no matter the breed. BTW we have 2 dachshunds and the female does NOT hunt the chickens. She can be in the pen with them. One was raised by me, and the other by my brother. Coincidence? I think not...When I get over the hate I have for the dog, maybe I will try and train him again but I need a little time to recooperate. You can't train a dog when you are biased and angry. Thanks again for the help!
