I Hate Dachshunds!!!

Our neighbor's Doxie comes by pretty regularly (they refuse to fence the 20 feet across their property, so tie up their dogs and then get loose A LOT) and we've dogsat him, as well. Thankfully, he never bothers our chickens, ducks or rabbits.

Unfortunately, they also have a lab/healer mix and that dog is constantly snapping and snarling at our birds through the fence and trying to pull down the fence with his claws. THAT is our problem and that is why we have guns set up at each door, since he's constantly getting loose.

My two dachshunds are rather intimidated by my birds. My basset hounds are their guardians, and my English setter sleeps amongst them while they're scratching around the yard. I never had to do any training whatsoever. I guess my dogs are exceptions to the rule.

This is so sad, but you can't blame the dauchsaund. I have a lab and a cocker spaniel (that I have bred heavy hunting bloodlines), both bird dogs. When I first got my newset chicks last year, these two sat relentlessly staring at the chicks. But I trained them that they were off limits and they all co-exhist. One day I was sitting on my lawn, with 10 hens, a rooster, cocker spaniel, a lab and a cat (oh, and a glass of wine)

I know it's hard when it's family especially but I'd say he's lost his privaliges to run and I wouldn't care what anyone thought.

I agree the dog is not at fault, no more than a chicken is at fault when they hunt down the little frogs and toads, that cross their path, I personally love frogs. Anyhow, the dog should be kept completely away from the chickens. The chickens are depending on you for their safety and security. BTW, I have a Daschund, she is not game at all towards chickens or anything else.
