I HATE fire ants! I hate them hate them hate them!!!!!!

When I first signed up chickenJ said that her grounds keeper bil used tide on the mounds. I bought some cheep laundry powder and used it. They get it on themselves and then groom. The soap then breaks the natural surface area tension and they drown. You do not even need rain. The soap attracts the moisture from the ground/air/ wherever. If you water it in it works quicker, but if they carry it deeper first before it dissolves it works better.
But it will KILL your grass. It will look burnt almost immediately.
And you have to keep this up for a while. The queens may survive and move, but eventually the mounds get smaller and smaller.
good luck. I hate fire ants too. I will not morn the loss of them if they become extinct.

*edit because I should proof read before chlicking send.

What about pouring a pot of boiling water with a dash of detergent? Ack, now I'm getting scared....I want to move to South Florida after grad school, and I just looked up info on the fire ants....they are everywhere in the south.

DE doesn't work for fire ants.

I've tried orange oil, and boiling water with limited success. They are mighty hard to kill.

I think hell may be infested with them. I got bit up today, and I'm going out for more ant killer tomorrow. HATE HATE HATE them!

I looked them up, and found that the active ingredient is Deltamethrin. This is a synthetic pyrethroid, in the class of one of the safest insecticides and with little documented resistance. Toxicity to animals upon exposure is minor, and the chemical is rapidly metabolized, with symptoms (typically muscle tremors interfering with the ability to stand and walk) that appear being very short-term. Keep away from any body of water containing fish, as they are very susceptible. But from the little I've been reading about it thus far, it seems pretty OK as long as you keep animals that might eat it away from the area for a few days. Hmmm....maybe I won't have nightmares tonight....
