Why not go the the sheriff and ask what the law says about protecting you livestock? That's where I would begin if I was worried with the law. And don't let these animal lovers know you shot it 50 times with a bb gun. That is torture. That's a lot like you getting struck 50 time by someone throwing darts. None of them will kill but you just might hit a lucky spot and you could bleed to death.

I use a high power .22 pellet gun for everything up to coyotes.and have killed a coyote with one shot. it works great is cheap to shoot quiet and safe for in town.
