It takes time, my wife will pet a chicken if I hold it. She about threw up last fall when I uthenized on that the dog got ahold of. As for the site and chickens being addictive I think I need a 12 step program lol.

We are chicken-a-holics and there is NO twelve step program, only more steps to getting more chickens.

My 12 step program is the 12 steps I take to the incubator.

Yep, it's the baby chicks that get me. I am soo hooked on hatching. There is nothing like watching that baby rolling out of it's shell. And there's nothing sweeter than a baby chick.

CookiesDaddy: Maybe my post was deceptive. I got them 17 days ago(almost two weeks), but the feed store had them advertised 3 weeks earlier. So mine were much bigger than new hatchlings. I would guess they are 5-6 weeks old now.... Most had some feathering of sorts on them....

at 3 week sof age the girl at Rural King(who showed chickens in 4H) picked out 9 pullets based on the size/color of comb for similiar birds. Well I got 4 pullets..... But hey she wsa 1 for 1 on the roo.....(He was pretty obvious, I guessed that one)....

12 Step program.....

1. Stop by the farm store...where they sell chicks.

2. Walk away...wondering...should I get just one or two? They are sooooooo cute!!

3. Go BACK to the feed store...buy 3...or 4 chicks.

4. Get new chicks in brooder at home, and watch for hours.

5. Go BACK to the feed store buy 6 or more chicks....the others look SO lonely in that BIG OL BROODER!

6. Watch new babies...for hours on end.

7. Build coop...babies getting big now.

8. Move babies to the new coop. Watch them again for hours on end.

9. Walking through the house, missing baby peeps...go BACK to the feed store...just a few more.

10. Raise these babies...get them introduced to the older ones.

11. Ohhhhhhh lookie at THAT breed, I dont have any of those....buy a few more...( 6 or more to be safe)

12. Give up all hope ... buy an incubator...raise more, and more, and more!!! Welcome to the 12 step program....enjoy life!!

Deb, You've hit the nail on the head with that discription! That is just exactly the way one gets addicted and becomes a chickaholic. I mean exactly! Been there and done that.........all of em! Then when you have done all the listed steps then return to one and start all over again! Repeat as many times as necessary. That is where I am with the chick thing, but I don't remember what number of repeat I am on. OH WELL! It don't matter! I'll just start again!

I'm a newcomer. I'm on step 3. Decided on 3 chicks and got 6. But in denial as my life is manageable with the 6 girls. Am obsessing about the coop/house and run landscaping. lol I'm so glad I don't feel all alone. Thanks. More is better?!!
