One thing I wonder about is removing the adult beetles. How’d you do it? Did you find one way easier than the other? And was it difficult to not throw away the eggs when you change the bedding? How long did you keep your colony?
They are really easy to raise. We used to take the mealworms and put them in individual cups with lids so they would turn to aliens. They are lots of fun.
 
the person I bought mealworms from, actually just used chicken crumbles to feed the mealworms...pretty easy. I also used oatmeal too, when convenient.

As I recall, you are in an arid environment. I was able to use a single carrot, split lengthwise for moisture - replace about 1x per week. However, you may be able to use a cut apple or potato in addition to carrot. The apple and potato would be more likely to mold for me since I live in a more humid area, but the carrot just dried out and never turned bad.
