...... I havent eaten any of their eggs yet

I have one red laying for 2 weeks now, I have every single one of her eggs. I have not even cracked one open yet .

I have my other red started laying 2 days ago. I think I am going to cook and scramble all the eggs up and
give them to them. I don't know why I have hesitations. I grew up on a small farm with chickens. I was raised on eggs.
I love eggs now. Why the mental issues I am having about eating my own hen's eggs ???????????

Interesting. In my view, the hens worked hard to give those to you and eating them is your thanks. It is also your personal protection over hens who made your eggs who were not treated well in their factory farm. Does that re-frame your thoughts?

I have a friend (farmgirl growing up) that will not eat an egg if it didn't come from the grocery store.
She will eat food that has fresh eggs in it, she will eat egg salad I make from my eggs but will not
open the fridge and get out fresh eggs and scramble them.She says it is a mental block she cant get
over. My aunt on the other hand will not eat eggs I didnt sell her. Eat those eggs, you know exactly
what they are made of, and they will be delicous.

What was your motivation for getting the chickens?

I kind of understand I think. I had that issue with my first flock. I got them "second hand", they were older, and really didn't lay very much. But I was so worried about finding something odd in the eggs, (like half a chick), that I just couldn't do it. I also felt a little guilty, they could have been my sweet little hens babies.

I bought farm eggs, but figured those people knew what they were doing, and wouldn't sell something weird.

So, I let my silkie set a ton of eggs one time, when nothing happen I had my friend open them, nothing. The roo was sterile!! So I did end up eating a few once I realized he couldn't do the job (no babies)

But by then the hens were quite old and stopped laying

This was many years ago, now I'm a mom that worries more about what's in the food I feed my family. My new flock should be laying anyday. I know I'll probably have an anxiety attack the first time I open an egg, and a lot of guilt, but my girls are well fed, healthy, and free range. I couldn't feed my family anything better!

I can relate...I grew up on a farm had chickens until I moved out as an adult and started out again last year...I bought farm fresh eggs from a friend and had no trouble eating them..but when I started with my own flock last year..I could not eat the eggs! It was so weird and I felt bad..but could not get myself to even try one. My DH and DS had no trouble! I got over it though in a few months! The feeling should pass!

When you were a kid, you ate what was served, without all those adult years of goofy ideas having been run through your brain, and without all that separation from our food. Imagine pointing out to a city dweller that his steak had parents.

Me, too, for a while. We had chickens when I was a kid, ate the eggs and the chickens, and I thought they were great. When I got my first flock in my 30's, we managed the eggs and even butchered (with tears) but wound up giving the meat away to a very grateful friend. This time around I managed scrambled or hard boiled from the get go. Trouble is, my favorite is over easy. Must have taken me 3 months to manage that.

But I'm over it now!

Just take it slow. Maybe start with baking with them. You'll get there.

LOL, my son is the opposite! He wont eat an egg from the store! He will the neighbors eggs, but not meijers!
My girls aren't old enough yet to lay, and the two fav hens I just got are in their first molt and quit laying... But looking forward to when they do. I have been looking thou, cuz the roo is carrying on his chicken porn, so I guess they should start laying soon... I hope..

My children probably wouldn't eat store eggs any more either. We had a pretty dry spell up till just recently and I never heard anything from them about 'mom, get some eggs from the store'. We just did without unless there were enough to make a meal of (and with only one hen laying there for a while, sometimes it would take a week).
