One of my EE's lays really large eggs and I have been hatching them with success in my hovabator. Well one of them pipped last night and hasn't progressed all day (getting close to 24 Hours), so I thought I would help it out a little (I know you're not supposed to). I peeled back just the part of the shell that was already detached from the membrane and put it back in the incubator. As I was watching it with a flash light I noticed that he looks really crowded and then noticed that he is smashed up against another membrane lining. As I watched it I noticed that the heartbeats and breathing were on different rhythms. The membrane has a lot of blood still in the veins and now the membrane is drying up. Any advice about what I should do? Or did I already screw up by touching it?

They will require your help or at least one will die in the shell. Work slowly and carefully. Go to youtube and search for twin chick hatch. There's a great video of a lady who had one. Good luck! Keep us posted and post PICS. Candle and see if you have 1 or 2 air cells. There will most likely only be one and the chick on the opposite side of the air cell will suffocate without help.

Try the damp paper towel trick to keep the membrane from drying out too much and keep an eye on it. If possible, don't cover any beak you see so they don't suck water out of the towel.

Fingers crossed!

FALSE ALARM!!! I hate it when I see things that aren't there. Either way the chick needed help because it had given up (at least that's what I'm choosing to believe). I carefully broke away the shell from the membrane and am now going to let it do the rest. My eyes were playing tricks on me though, there's only one chick. I'm excited though because it is a feathered shank which I'm only getting a small percentage of from my EE/BCM cross. Let me tell you though this cross grows QUICK. My 3 week old chicks are almost as big as the 2 month old hatchery RIR cockerels I received as an extra with my duckling order. Sorry everyone!
