I have a HUGE egg, double yolker? Should I try and hatch it? UPDATE

In times past, it was considered a bad idea, for the reasons ridgerunner suggests. You certainly did not want to pass on defective egg laying abilities to any offspring that might hatch.
Not to mention that it rarely worked - most doubles do not hatch, contrary to our hopeful nature.

but we are not driven by efficiency or producing our own sustenance. Truth be told, chicken wrangling is a diversion for most of us.
Given that, there is little reason not to try it. I would.

But I would not allow any pullet that arose from such an effort to breed out.

Check it out speaking of double and triple yokers... I got the biggest egg every laid by my girls. I'm sure it's a double or triple yoker because I have one hen that lays the doubles. I can't figure out who it is either. It can only be a australorp, buff orp, or slw. And I got my first egg out of my BLW today!!! Record day

Had an accidental one incubated. Did not work out well at all. Generally, it's a bad idea, and I'd not do it on purpose.

I do note a tendency to consider it "cool," a sort of *eggy bonus* to have double yolkers. It's the equivalent of a henyard BOGO sale, where you get something for nothing.

Nothing is further from the truth. When you consider the purpose of the egg - which is not to delight or feed US, BTW - it is seen to be a detrimental mutation within Nature.

Having said that, it is still neat enough to try hatching one. As Cyn alludes, though, don't expect too much.

After it all, it is neat to try, right? You have your head screwed on straight - you'll do alright.

I don't think it's a good idea. you could end up with a four legged chick and they don't usually live very long.
