I Have A Lonely Chicken.... *Confusion Cleared Out, Read again!*

I'm confused. Does this chick stay outside all the time?? You mention it being outside without a coop. Do you take it in at night??

I agree with everyone else that says you need to either get more chicks or rehome your chick. I know that will be difficult if that is what it comes to, but you have to do what is best for the chick.

I have to agree with other posts, since getting another chicken is not going to happen for some months, finding another home for a lone chicken is really the best option. Sounds like you are taking good care of her; it's just that chickens are flock animals.

If you do keep her and she is the only chicken, you will become her flock, and she will expect to come in the house and have you as her companion for the rest of her life. I assume you are in school, so that means she will have no one for a lot of hours of the day. Not the best life for a chicken.

I'm sure it was just bad luck having two of the three die. What is unusual is ordering chicks and never having one die. Really, you should buy 5 or 6 to end up with 3 good hens, especially if you have a handy way to sell or give them away.

Maybe if you show your parents some of the advice on this forum about baby chicks and how often they just die for no apparent reason, they will realise that you most likely didn't do anything wrong and that you weren't 'irresponsible' with your chicks. Maybe you could show them some advice on chickens being flock animals and they might realise that keeping just one chicken really is a form of cruelty as they definitely need a flock around them. Just ONE more chicken would be so much better for your lonely buddy out in the yard all day. If you can persuade your folks that you really should get another one, I think you'd be best to look for one as close in ages to the one you've already got.

But if you can't get your folks to agree to another chicken, I think you really have to rehome this one. Could you maybe get a chicken keeping friend to 'foster' it with a
flock until your folks will let you get more chickens and a proper coop? Then you could bring it home to it's own flock in a few months. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone so much for all the helpful advise. I will try to convince my parents today....
