wishing the best for your bird....

I had a chicken chick do this one time and i popped it. It did fine after that. I used a needle that I sterilized first. It wasnt as big as the one on the quail and it was on the side of it's neck.

I had a balloon bird once (Air trapped under it's skin). Sorry, I have no idea what caused it, but it was very distressing for me to see, because it appeared very painful to the bird. When it would sit down, the air would blow up it's head. Don't get me wrong. I say that if a bird has one good eye and can see how to eat and drink, they are keepers. I've nursed some very hurt birds back to health. This was unlike any scalping.

My answer was to cull it, but that turned into a nightmare of it's own.

I've never had one since, but if it happens again and air is displacing into the head area. I will lance the skin at the base of the skull, and see if it all vents out and heals. I'm sorry for your problem but at least based on my experience, it should be quite rare.

I had two chicks hatch yesterday. I left them in the incubator, waiting for more eggs to hatch, but they got on the sponge, were very wet again and panting, so I put them in the brooder/aquarium to dry and warm.
One blew up like a balloon! his neck, belly were both distended and it would stretch out on it's back and kick it's legs. I have been searching this forum and found this post. Soooo….took a sterilized needle and lanced by the neck, though the belly looked larger and the easiest to poke. Amazing results! it's eyes opened wider, stopped gasping, I gentle squeezed it's tummy and got most the air out. It is now moving around the brooder, stumbling, but looks much better.
I hope it will make it! This one was by far the friendliest. I only have seven eggs to hatch and am looking for more Valley quail eggs to get new blood in the gene pool.

Well, little "Air-born" is still with us; I just had to relieve more air build up in the abdomen area, but it is sleeping, eating and drinking.
I read there are 4 under-skin air sacs in birds?!!? Seems all may be affected though the neck area isn't big this time.

The skin is dry and papery sounding (maybe from being stretched out all night?) I rubbed some Coconut oil on it, as my Neosporine is all the stuff with pain med, and I heard that wasn't good. Coconut oil is a disinfectant also, sooooo… nothing ventured, nothing gained. May soften the skin and prevent some infection.

will keep you all updated!

Well, I still have to deflate the chick every now and then. I've been giving it VetRx for birds respiratory problems, but have no antibiotic to fight the bacteria. Once the pressure is off it's skin, it seems OK; eats, drinks, runs around, but I don't think either of us can take the poking much longer. May have to cull.

Where do you "poke"? We have a 6 month old quail.rooster who has quite the ballooned abdomen.. I feel bad for him!!

I did it I had my son hold it in-case it went whizzing off like a balloon but it just deflated quickly no bother and now he's back to normal size. I hope it worked and it doesn't come back

Did it work, my 2 year old female is bloated, should I do what you did,
