I recently bought an acreage that was old saw mil. I have a 3 acre field of decomposed sawdust that has nothing growing on it. It's 1 foot deep and then it's clay. What is the best way to get somthing growing on it? I have just built a chicken tractor for 6 laying hens. I've also been considering meat chickens in a separate chicken tractor. Is there some other bird or animal that does well in sawdust and can fertilize the land.

Chicken poop is good nitrogen for all that sawdust, but it would take forever. Horse poop, on the other hand, is plentiful and it would do the trick. Thankfully, all you need to do is find a couple of people who have a few horses, and ask them if they can help you load up a rented truck, and then all you would need to do is spread it over your fields. In no time, you will have all kinds of wild plants growing. Maybe even some grass.

I have clay soil so I grow my veggies in pure horse poop. It's a wonderful growing medium. I have friends with horses, and they are so happy to get rid of the poop, they even bring it to me.
