Miss Prissy - I'm so sorry to hear of all the losses but I'm thankful you opened the box even if only one survives.
I've lost count, did the two that were in the pic drinking make it? They looked so good.
I would be inclined to ship the box of dead chicks right back to MM. Maybe wrap it in brown shipping paper, unmarked, stick a label on it and mail it anonymous. Let someone there open a box of death with a stench. Put a note in the box on top of the 98? dead chicks that says "Next time use a tracking number". In the meantime, get a full refund.
Our local P.O. is great and do call when my chicks have arrived and I'm sure if I had called one of them and asked them to open a box and give them water they would have because for no other reason, they have to look at us every day and live in this small town with us. But the woman in Jackson that we spoke to on a hot July refused to open the box and give them water - claimed it was against the rules but she would keep them on her desk, instead of the hot box of a truck, till the next day when they would be shipped the remaining 3 hours to here.
The problem with shipping anything Express anymore is that the P.O. rarely seems to guarantee Express anymore. I can't tell you how many packages I've sent, just regular mail packages not chicks, and no matter what the zip code, I'm told "Express isn't guaranteed to that zip code." I was getting this response even when I lived in Covington which is a major town - I definitely get it now that I live in a one stop sign town. I remember asking the postal clerk once "Just which zip codes do you still guarantee express to?" We had to quit using the USPS for shipping software and other business items when the customer needed it the next day and had to use Fed Ex instead. Of course, I understand they won't ship chicks - so what's a person to do?
In the meantime, I don't think I will ever again order live chicks - it's just too nerve wracking.
So sorry for your loss.
