I have baby-itis

6chickens in St. Charles :

But look! Two are WHITE! I don't have any white chickens!

If the other chicks are blue and black, then these must be splashes. Splashes have two copies of the blue
gene and many look white. If both parents are blue then you should get 50% blue, 25% black, and 25%
splash (double blue).

The dad is this Silkie rooster, and we think the mom is his daughter, the blue Rosecomb/Silkie mix. What do you think? There's another daughter of his who started out quite pale grey, then grew up into a pigeon gray hen, but we never see her dating the rooster like this blue one does.

A black rooster and a blue hen can't produce splashes. Either both the rooster and the hen are blue (doesn't look like it), or one of them is a splash (nope), or they both carry recessive white.

Aha! But somebody told us this rooster is a blue............

underneath, he is blue, almost white. The beetle green blackness is only on his top feathers.

But the rosecomb hen is absolutely black, through and through. She's the mom of the blue rosecomb/silkie mixes. So the mom of the white chicks is mixed black rosecomb with blue Silkie.

Wow they've grown so fast!

I'm having a blast using this thread to "scrapbook" these chicks' progress!

These two are now named Beaker and Pearl Roobaby Eddie Vedder:

They act like little cockerels, bump-fighting and doing "the stare" like mirror images of each other. Beaker got all the Silkie genes!

They also avoid being seen with the "ugly phase" little henny pullets:

What a change from day one!:

Still, she's a sweetie, cute little thing tucks her head in like a wee little wren for naps:

So, this makes them, ummm, if they hatched on July 30 (according to this thread), 6 and a half weeks old! What a quick fix for baby - itis.

from July 30 to September 30, they've become real chickens!
From these little babies, just hatched:

...to these little pullet (and cockerel ? The silkie is hard to tell, probably a boy):

All four chicks have become nice little chickens in just 8 weeks, but for a few days it's been hard to email photos from our iphones to our home computers for photo editing. But I can't wait to upload more, I have some nice pictures. soon as the photos cross the airwaves and into my email box. This program is addictive.

8 weeks old, more pics:

Eddie and JimmyNeutron, almost as big as their nanny chloe:

Eddie, photoshopped for color and contrast:

That last picture was my first try at the iphone's photoshop app. It's difficult. DH says the next iphone photoshop app may have buttons to push instead of slide-screen technology.

WOW it's been 11 weeks! Gone from this:

...to this!

to this Silkie boy!

...used to be this little guy:

Now I have these nice little chickens

This beats scrapbooking, if this were a scrapbook it would be 8 pounds by now, and just with these 4 little guys! Not even the whole shabang!
