I’m sorry for your loss.. She looked like a sweet hen.

Try to reenforce/protect that area and do a walk around the coop to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Very sorry for your experience! :(

She was a pretty gal. 🥰

Staples, most of them are not sufficient. Here my hardware cloth is sandwiched between the frame and firring strips, screwed in. There's also some locations on my coops that have screws with washers to attach the hardware cloth which have also been very effective thus far.. these statements made for consideration in case you have more birds that still need protection. The raccoon will return.

I'm sorry for your loss! Please take experienced chicken keepers advise when they say cover all openings with 1/2" hardware cloth because when reinforced properly it'll protect them at night from coons and such .My dogs alert me to predators by day and I have a baby monitor and game camera for nights. All of these are long term solutions to keeping backyard chickens alive without killing anything with guns or traps. Not guaranteeing you won't ever have chickens killed because bears require an electric fence but it lessons the likelihood of it happening while you're fast asleep

If you have other chickens please secure the coop or move the chickens to a safe place until you can make it safe for the rest of them! Hardware cloth is no safer than chicken wire if its not secured properly.Coons are intelligent, persistent, strong animals and can open any lock a toddler can with their little paws that have thumbs
