i take the news paper and take a paper shreader and shread it and put it in there, i think the sugar water is what may have give them the upset. hope the get better william

Do you have guineas, ducklings and chicks all together? Are all about a week old and how long out of that week have you had them. Were some shipped to you or did you buy them from someone else. How long have you been feeding them sugar water? I'm trying to help but I'm having a hard time following just exactly what is going on. Did the chicks and guineas that died also have diarreah prior to death? Any other symptoms? Were they lethargic at all.

Ducklings do have the runniest, stinkiest poop on the face of the planet so I'm not sure if what you are calling diarreah is actually diarreah.

In any event, stop all sugar water. Add some vitamins and give them some high protein food to eat, like scrambled egg, shredded cheese, or wet some dry cat food and mush it up. Something to get nutricious food in their little bellies.

Hi Sandra - I went and read some of your other threads. Look like the guineas had pasty butt and were stopped up and you had to get a lot of poop out of them (I'm paraphrasing). So that would be a different problem than a duckling with diarreah. Still not sure what happened to the chicks. But if the guinea died it could have been from being stopped up. How did you get the poop out of it?

Wish I could help more but I'm out of ideas.

I got my ducks from Hatchery and stopped on the way home and got the little chicks and they had the runs, like the 2nd day.So the guienas came with the little ducks. And when I got home with them the ducks was falling out dead .It first started with the little chicks ,but one was runny. Then it got to the guienas and they died, and then this morning, the bigger chick got sick and killed over. And sorry to say I had to cull the other one.Because of the spreading of the germs. So all together,I ahve one little sick duck separate form the other 4.And I have santized the everything I have in here. And i am so upset.I don`t know if it was the hatchery or the people local or both. But eggs won`t hurt them. And cheese.Man ,I can`t hardly stand this much longer!!!! Sandra

sweetie...take a breath..
answer Ruth's questions..so we can understand what's going on.
are all the birds together?

not always a good idea to have chicks and ducklings together..or guineas..

chicks shouldn't be on shavings..try and get some of that rubbery non-slip shelf lining (Walmart has it)

what temp are you keeping them?
very important..
1st week old..95 degrees
then 5 degrees less each week..no drafts.

chilling can sometimes cause the pasty butt.
are you saying the all the chicks also have diarrhea?

do you have any cocci med?

I agree on not keeping the different breeds together but it really sounds like cocidiosis. Is the duck just kinda slugish and trying to stay where its the warmest? The last chick I had that got this I ended up bringing into the house and I put in a box next to the heater. I used a siringe to get some water down it and put it some warter with a lil bread in it and after it ate some of the watery bread and got warm by the second day I turned it back out. I actually thought I would loose her at first she had even got to the point she had blood in her poop. But shes all better now. I hope just a lil more TLC will help with your duck....Good Luck!
