I have lots of roosters in my flock!

Why not?

Chicken is chicken...no getting around that.

That's good though. At least you don't have to keep feeding them. Your friend was probably happy to get them. Good job!

a chicken is no longer food once its a pet.........if its not a pet i GUESS its ok just not 4 me

The original poster never said the roos were pets. Folks have to realize that there are lots of people on this forum who consider chickens livestock. And there are lots of people who consider chickens pets. I understand both sides but if someone is asking how to get rid of a roo and they don't say that selling them for food is an issue then IMHO we should respect that. Just as we should respect folks who don't eat their birds.

I agree! Seems like every time there is a post on here about culling or rehoming birds, someone has to chime in on how horrible they think it is or that THEY would NEVER do such a thing because THEIR chickens are pets. We get it. You think your chickens are pets and that's lovely. But there are many, as mentioned, who are into chickens for the food source and are posting based on that perspective.

If you have no other options to post other than "please don't eat them" then I can't see where that is constructive at all...unless you tack on "....because I will take them off your hands and turn them into pets at my place." THEN I could see where that is helpful.

My chickens are pets. However, I hatched an unusually high number of males this year and ended up with ~20 young roosters. I had one hatch of 9 chicks that had only one female

My birds are bantams and all the boys are friendly and pretty. I loved them all but as they began crowing....well, that was a problem. I tried selling them. Nope. I tried giving them away. Nope. Eventually I put out a plea on Craigslist for someone to take them even if they had to be eaten and was lucky when some people with a hobby farm and a bunch of kids agreed to take them AND not eat them. I realize now just how hard it is to place males and this will be a factor of consideration in the future before I load up my incubator! There are lots of situations in the world where being born a male has distinct advantages, but the world of chickens sure isn't one of them.
