But shaving aren't really effective for bathing. Dirt would be.Mine only ever have shavings and or dirt. I don't do sand baths

Yep, once they get to that "special age" they turn to all those chicken antics. When I brought my first brood out I thought they would be bathing in the sand .....nope.....they chose the dead sod part of the run to *attempt* to dust bathe. They figured it out nowmine did that too then bathed in it at 3 weeks old now they are almost 6 weeks and do it in the sand coop. they use just about anything.
