I have raised me some egg eaters!

My flock started eating there own eggs, there was yolk all over their little faces and destroyed egg shells. Now I get 0 eggs and can't tell if they eat them or have stopped laying. I have to buy eggs again! Most recent recovered egg had a peck mark in it. We also had a horrific drought this summer and there were no bugs nor grass for them to eat and they got depressed that may be a reason they stopped laying if it is that.

How do I break this habbit or do I resign to my chickens eating their eggs?

Get some nests that roll off the eggs.

Never resign to your chickens eating their eggs. Now that they know what they are it’s going to be a very difficult habit to break. There are methods, but in my experience it’s very frustrating and COSTLY. Now they are mooching off if you.

Blow out an egg and fill it with soap.
Put it back in the nest for them to peck at.
Possible find higher protein feed.

Either isolate them in own cage and see what one eats their egg, or segregate half and see what half eats eggs. Keep halving the numbers until you have your definite egg eaters.

Cull them and make a nice soup.

I like the protein idea. I feel like giving my chickens soap is going to poison them, though.

I keep them as pets. They all have names. I love them more than dogs. Heck no.

Ok. Then get the answer of the offending chicken and start training her to leave eggs alone (ceramic eggs in nest full time, soap and mustard filled eggs, etc)

Egg eating is a contagious habit. Wish you luck.
