I have seen out of this world auctions but this takes the cake!

LOL I was just thinking something similar. Last year, it was FBCMs. The year before that, it was any chicken that was "blue" or "lavender" (I'm sorry, they all look gray to me). Chocolate Orps seem to be the 2011 Fad Chicken.

Chocolate orpingtons… fancy way of saying fat/fluffy brown chicken.

I got a fat brown chicken I'll sell ya for half of that. LOL.

Just wait....next year, there will be like 100 auctions for hatching eggs and then the year after that--they'll be a dime a dozen.

That's one bad thing about the chicken business...before you know it everyone and their mom is selling some new, hot breed and the market gets saturated and the breed standard is thrown by the wayside with the interest of making a fast dollar.

I like the chocolates too but if I was to get into them, I'd wait a few years, buy the best stock I could and wait even longer until the "puppy mill" chicks/breeders were fizzling out and then start selling with type in mind.

I agree to a point. I would rather have stock that hasn't been messed with and turned to garbage. They have such gorgeous type and I absolutely LOVE the chocolate gene.
The cost is high because he Imported these. To import there a lots of fees/charges...including approximately $600 for EACH chicken , quarantine ALONE.

If I could afford it I would have gotten in on it before the lines get turned to something that is hard to salvage the original look from , but that's just my opinion....

For that price I would get on a plane and pick them up after inspecting the place. The buyer may not even get birds!!! I have heard some serious horror stories of "chicken mills"... I'd have to invest a few more hundred and pick them up personally.
