I have some questions about Marek's disease and Laryngotracheitis and their vaccines.

Age doesn't matter.

Its sad to see this become personal.

ChicknsRock - while I am sure you are excited about the improvements in your chicken but before you get too defensive, listen to what is being said to you.

There is no conspiracy to get you. People with many years of experience and thousands upon thousands of posts here on BYC are actually trying to help you.

Thousands of posts here on BYC doesn't matter either. I'm sorry If I became too defensive, but ten chicks thinks everything I say is wrong.
I really don't have any proof, but I think the hypericum kills the viruses. She is definitely starting to walk.
At least you're nicer than ten chicks.

Rocks, I have my degree in molecular biology and I have studied viruses a lot. Hypericum doesn't kill the virus. There are very few antivirals which actually get rid of a virus once it has reached a certain titer (that refers to the concentration of the viral organisms in the body). Birds are so very stoic that once we actually notice that there is an infectious agent attacking them, it is usually so rampant in their bodies that they've actually reached a tipping point in their infection. The hypericum is either supressing the virus enough that your birds body is able to heal somewhat or it is allowing her body to heal faster than the virus can cause damage.

I am excited to hear that you and other people are having such success with hypericum and I would not be of the opinion that you should cull this lucky chicken. When I was a kid, Mareks was a slow, painful death sentence. The fact that this herbal tincture can reverse these horrible symptoms and prolong their quality of life is wonderful to hear. I don't know enough about the virus which causes Mareks to say whether it will go into some kind of permanent remission or if you will need to keep her on the tincture for the rest of her life. But I do know that Mareks is a very unique virus in the way that it is passed from one chicken to another. I would assume that all of your affected birds contemporaries have already been exposed to mareks so putting her back with your flock shouldn't make a difference, but if you get or hatch any new birds, might I suggest that you make sure that they are vaccinated for mareks before exposing them to your existing flock.

I have at no point said everything you say is wrong,i am happy that your girl is getting better. The point i am trying to get you to understand is that your girl still has Marek's even though her symptoms are better, she is still a carrier and will still infect other chickens. You need to understand this for the sake of your other chickens. You would feel terrible if she infected someone else's chickens b/c you assumed she was cured. I am not here to debate this with you, only to urge you to have caution in regards to this matter.

Well, when someone has a reason for denying it, I can believe it. So I might believe what you just said. Can you tell me anything about hemp oil and olive oil? I give that to her too.
If only 10chicks could have said something like that....

I think that hemp oil and olive oil are two very good choices. They are both high quality fats, low in saturated fat, high in some essential compounds which I can't name off of the top of my head, I don't know that they would have an effect directly on the disease process of Mareks, but they certainly can't hurt and can only add to her health. I might add something with a little Omega 3 fatty acid in it. I am not sure if hemp oil contains Omega 3's (DHA) but I know that flax seed oil does and its a lot cheaper than krill oil or salmon oil (smells better too). I have tried giving my chickens whole flax seeds and they don't eat them, but yours might like them.

Where in NC do you live? I am in Beaufort. I have two Arabians, what kind of horse do you have? Do you ride english or western? I like the picture of your geese, they're such funny creatures, so entertaining.

Wow, lots has happened on this thread since I last checked it.

For an update on my side, I found a nice pair of black cochin bantams at a show yesterday. They were from a healthy non-vaccinated flock and they are currently in quarantine. I plan to start vaccinating for Marek's disease. I probably won't vaccinate for Laryngotracheitis, but it's an option for the future.
