I have to destroy my entire flock. I need a very humane way

I thought you wanted a humane way to cull them??
I'd ask a vet about this method before you do it...
I would really talk to a vet...
putting an animal down should never be something that we "experiment" with...

I hope the OP reads the links you posted. That last one was a real eye opener.

Shame on the sellers of those chickens. I hope you are letting them know what their lie has caused.

I would personally cut their heads off if you are going to cull. Very hard on you though. I'm so sorry you are going through this.

Thanks, I linked to the second page but there are 5 pages of useful info there.

What a nightmare you are going through! I am so sorry for your ordeal and wish that these chickens didn't have to go to waste.

Please keep us posted as to your method. Heaven forbid we find ourselves facing such a situation on a mass scale...we can at least reference this. I'm sure there isn't recourse for you, but at least let the sellers know how much devastation took place for their possible negligence.

Best of luck to you. Have a three fingers glass of whiskey ready for you when the job is done!

I would use a starter fluid soaked rag in a rubbermaid container if I had to destroy my whole flock. I'd put them in in pairs and let them eat watermelon, then toss in the rag and run. I can't be present for that- it kills me.

I'm so very sorry, but beyond that, I really want to commend you on doing the right thing and not risking other folks by hanging on to them and potentially causing a worse outbreak.

I do want to ask you if you've checked into your state laws- this is often a reportable disease, and in some states they will come and destroy your flock via injection. You might ask around and see if you can find out- the lab who did the necropsy may know.

ETA- Starter fluid specifically isn't the same as just gassing. It's simply ether, which was used as the best anesthetic known, even for humans, well into the 1960's.

Do not use car exhaust!!! Car exhaust is just about water vapor on new cars. Even if you're talking about an old crappy thing, it's an incredibly painful way to do it. You don't just fall asleep like they show in the movies.

I would check with the vet and see if they will give you something to inject them with. I'm pretty sure I even saw that on here before where someone was able to get something from their vet. Otherwise, I would go with whatever is QUICK with the hightest rate of success.

I know that this need to be as less stressful and painful for you as possible, but that would be by making it as stressless and painless for your chickens as possible.

I am so, so sorry for all that you are going through.

I can not even imagine having to do that

I really do wish you the best of luck

(I also wish the person that sold them to you to have a swarm of bees in their underpants)

I am so sorry you are going through this! I cannot even imagine.... My chickens are my babies & I do not think I could handle it if something like this were to happen to them. But, then again, I would not want them to suffer or to cause any new ones to get sick.

I just wanted to express my sympathies. I wish I had some good advice too. I do agree with a lot of the posters who mentioned talking to the vet.
Whatever you do decide to do, I wish you lots of strength to be able to do it.

I'm so sorry you have to do this!

I would call the Department of Agriculture. This might be on their list and if it is, they would put the birds down for you.
