I think they are very content in a confined area. I have always let my chickens free range and really couldn't imagine have chickens caged up, even in a large pen....until I got the Polish. I knew I would need to keep them separate because I'm breeding but once i realized that they are actually content to be in a confined space I sure felt better about it. I think that due to their limited vision that they do well in a more familiar area. I have 4 girls and they rarely miss a day! My first Polish that I had in my free range group was about 3 years old and she gave me about 3 eggs a week but she never hung with everyone. Pretty much stayed near the coop or in the barn, so I think you may be right about them feeling better in a designated space.
I'd love for her to have family, but she needs to do her part! I have her poof trimmed so she can see and she seems to be happy with the flock and she goes outside with them and scratches around like a regular chicken. I hatched her myself and she grew up with other chicks that are now part of the flock. She has a "friend", my frizzled Sizzle, who she always roosts with at night. I guess I could try her in a confined area and see what happens. It feels SO MEAN but maybe she would like it. I guess it won't hurt to try it out.

Well, you don't have to if she's happy where she is.

He's a 3+ yr old cock,
The silver white gene helps keep him white lol :)

Also they're limited to sun light, I try to let them out daily depending on sun.

As far as feed I make my own mix, i include corn in the mix.
Even with young chicks we have our mixes to help full out breast and gives feather quality.

Started my mixes last year sofar so good :)

We cull intensely right from the incubator,
Will post pics of chicks soon have a hatch coming and will try to describe
what we look for in day old chicks.

Josh thanks for the upcoming pix and info about how you cull. We are just starting to breed seriously and I was wondering about how to figure out what to keep and what to cull.

And your white roo confirms what I've been struggling with -- we have a white bearded hen that is getting brassy again after her molt. I think it's time to cage her. We caged a frizzled roo last year, and he looks so much better than when he free-ranged with the flock. My softy/mom side wants to let her hang out, but the fact is we show her and it's counterproductive to let her get that sun & dirt and then try to clean her up for showing. (Plus, she's safe from predators in a cage versus free ranging, LOL)

These are our newest babies - hatched from our WC Blue (3 yrs old) hen and WC Black roo (1.5 yrs. old)

I was pleased to get splash instead of black - we are hoping to get away from black & white and concentrate on blues & chocolates.

This was their second day outside playing, they are about two weeks old here. The black chick is our mystery chick, still trying to figure out what he is

The little polish chick in the background here is only about a week old, from the second batch of eggs we set.
