I have to talk POLISH!

Just got back from a show in Reno, NV. We did very well! Our wc chocolate cockerel won Best Breed and Reserve AOCCL. We also had a Cochin win Best Breed and Reserve Feather Leg. We had 9 Best varieties and 4 best breeds. Our oldest daughter won Junior Bantam Reserve Champion with the wc chocolate.

I hope my boy's crest fills out like that! How do you prep a crest for showing? The last show I was at, the lady I got my boy from had her birds and the judge said they would have won but their crests weren't plucked? He placed them last. How do you pluck a polish crest? I have a SL.

Yes you pluck crests in the white crested varieties. You want a "butterfly" shape. Not much color.
You don't need to pluck any of the laced varieties.

Ok, so I've noticed a little personality quirk in my Polish hens that I wanted to discuss... My Polish girls--even the ones that are normally shy--become absolutely fearless when they see a cat or dog. They will mob and try to drive off any cat that comes into the flock, and yesterday, Chicky Gaga was chasing my dog--a known chicken-killer--from the other side of the dog run. Today, Osa the cat tried to join my Dad and me out in the garden, but Gaga spotted her and chased the poor cat allll around the garden, in and out of the roses, and so on. She didn't stop until I scooped Osa up and held her in my arms out of Gaga's reach.

None of the other chickens are nearly as concerned with uninvited guests as the Polish are. Is this a typical Polish trait, or is it just my girls?

The Polish girls mobbing C'zer

Bubbles harassing C'zer.

Gaga harassing my dog through the fence.

My Polish cockerel would chase and peck squirrels that ran through my yard. One time humane one of my EEs cornered the squirrel, jumped on it, and pecked it. The squirrel wanted to play. I felt so bad for it. My white Polish hen would help him too. So yes, both my Polish have attacked another animal.
