I have to talk POLISH!

I'm having a dilemma. I have a gorgeous (to me anyway) WCB rooster. He was my pick of the litter in my first straight run batch, and he makes beautiful babies.

All of a sudden he has gotten very aggressive. This is his first full breeding year, and in the last month or so he has started meeting me at the door any time I go into the pen. He follows me up and down the pen line, and I can't feed them without getting a few kicks in the process. I don't want to cull him, because he is really producing some nice offspring, but is this a bred trait? Should he be culled for this? I have 28 eggs of his in the incubator right now, and I'm wondering if I should keep a few roosters for myself and try to spend a little more time with them as they grow to see if I can get a better disposition. I just hate to swap the main man out of my flock because the girls know him, and he makes nice chicks. Thoughts?

That is definitely a dilemma :( Maybe try putting him in "time out".. this is what I do anytime my boy gets too big for his britches and he is such a good boy these days.. Today, my neighbors roo and about 8 of his hens got into my chickens fenced area..my roo and 4 hens are the only ones in that area and it's pretty big..anyways, my roo(he's a year old) got brave and mounted one of the other hens right in front of the other roo (he's an older guy..probably 3 or so)..and of course it was on..2 LF boys in full on "go" mode..I figured it was going to be blood and feathers and I took off to them...my boy glances over at me..gives the other roo a quick peck and struts off, past me to herd his girls out of the way so I could get the others out of the fence.. He is top roo..only if I'm not around and we have a nice peaceful relationship. Good luck..he's gorgeous. .

Mine have responded to behavior modification. Never back up. If he comes at you come at him. Then push him around the yard for about 10-20 minutes every day. Like he needs to know that YOU can move him off his territory. Do not let him eat or drink in your presence. Do not let him mate in your presence. Just keep pushing him along every day. It may take a day, a week or a month. BUT you will win this. Like stalking him. Stand between him and the girls as much as you can and don't let him cross you. Don't just whack them. It's like inviting them to a fight. And you may win that but with fear. I have saved a lot of cocky brats this way. A few Polish too. I have really never had a problem rooster. Only nice ones and reformed ones.

That is fantastic advice, thank you. I don't back down, don't kick at him, but I've been getting down and having a staring contest. I didn't think about just pushing him around. That just makes so much sense. I will get started on that immediately.

I've heard (read) that advice in several threads about naughty roos and it usually has great reviews :) Hope your boy figures out who is top roo in the flock;) he's too pretty to be soup ..lol

I figured there were rooster handling threads, but I wanted to post here in case anyone knew that Polish were more prone to this. He is a good looking rooster, and takes care of his girls, so I just need to reassert myself as the dominant one. When I first got into chickens, I had a barred rock that was mean. I kicked at him and that only made it worse. Ended up selling him. Now all of my roosters are good, but this one is getting cocky. It all started when one of his girls got into the pen beside his. I came home from work, and she had flown higher than I thought she could and got into the marans pen. I coralled her into a corner, and he went nuts. I carried her back to him, and that's when he kicked me for the first time and hasn't stopped since. It surprises me how sharp his claws are, too, because he draws blood every time, even with pants on. I haven't backed down, but I haven't been aggressive, either. I think this will do the trick

Yeah, unfortunately I've read probably just as many that say to beat them, pick them up and shake them and lots of other stuff I think would only make the situation worse. I think when dealing with any breeding animal, in order to deal with the aggressive, you have to think like they would and deal with it from that point of view..i know if i were a roo and everytime someone came in my pen, and they were swinging a broom or poking me with a stick, I'd just be more sneaky about my attacks, and definitely wouldn't just 'give in'..
Youre on the right path, my lovely boy in my profile pic was great..I rehomed him and his girls bc of a feral dog pack and didnt want to risk them and my friend that has him said he is head roo, but that he is very respectful of her.. hope my Tolbunt boy(s) turn out to be good.. fingers crossed for you ♡

Thanks, those Tolbunts are beautiful

I have been wanting the Tolbunt forever it seems..Racuda (on here) is where I purchased my eggs from..his breeders are gorgeous, and he wasn't on the other side of the country (since I had to get shipped eggs), but I'm more excited than a kid at Christmas ♡♡

I saw a quad advertised about 2 hrs from me for $100, and they were gorgeous. I had to restrain from buying them. I'm getting myself a little strung out as it is. I love the WCBs, but those Tolbunts are striking
