I have to talk POLISH!

That's all we use now, the horizontal nipples in buckets. After the first bird figured it out, they all got it rather quickly. They are great in winter as well, we just put a bucket heater in them and they don't freeze up.

I hatched some of his his eggs, those were the roos in the picture, but thanks! I did get two frizzle roos, two smooth roos and one smooth hen from that hatch. My roo luck at it's finest.

I bought 20 day old Silkies one time..ended up with 18 roos and 2 hens..lol..I told myself from then on that I would pick the ugliest chicks (if there is such a thing) and then they'd all be girls
I am on the hunt for gold(en) laced eggs so that I'll have something to work on the Tolbunts with, but here's hoping to great hatches..

Have you ever started chicks out on them? I don't know if I should just put one in the brooders and then tap it either my finger, or wait until they're older..

I have three of her eggs under a broody and they are at 11 days today and developing. I really hope there pure since I do have a silkie rooster in my flock, but I have never seen him mate with my Tolbunt hen. It was just a trial to see if her eggs are fertile.

I usually start them with a standard font with marbles in it. I switch them over to the nipples when they are about 2 weeks. I'm afraid they won't push on the trigger hard enough to get a drink when they are new.

Tomorrow I have 150 chicks arriving, we're just setting up brooders, fonts, etc. right now. I'm excited!

Holy cow..I thought having 2 LGs going both full was going to be a lot. You've got me beat hands down..lol..

Thanks for advice about waterers..that's what I was worried about, especially since about half my eggs are Silkies and banties..

I'm up to my eyeballs in chicks today.  I ordered 150, received 156.  They all made it!

Lucky you..lol..
what breeds? Or just some meaties?
I don't even eat eggs really..use them to cook but kids and boyfriend tear them up..
on a side note, I've been here at this far for 3 years, other than living here from the time I was 2 until about 12..
we had a pack of feral dogs and a couple coons sneak down after dark..but just about 45 mins ago, I heard the chickens going nuts (I have a small flock of 4 hens and a roo that free range 24\7 bc they refuse to stay in any pen..anyways....run out the door like a crazy person, with my boxer, pittie and affenpinscher hot on my heels...there's a fox in the middle of my wide open 20+ acre horse pasture..with 2 horses in it...going after my chickens..the 3 dogs took off while I took off after the gun.. I'm sure it's a she with kits to feed(my 1st thought was rabies)..but dang, that's pretty brave..the dogs had her clear up over the ridge before I made it to the door..they're still not back ..hope she finds a quick meal elsewhere. .

I won't get to keep many, there are for sale in our store. I keep thinking of banding a few polish for myself though.

Mixed Polish (mine, all mine, LOL!)
Welsummer
Barred Rock
Lt. Brahma
Jersey Giants
and Cuckoo Marans

We have fox lurking around during the day too lately. All birds are on lockdown for now.
