I am new to the polish breed and did order a book of standards (not here yet) but I have been curious since getting my polish: Do the roosters need a V Comb to be "show quality"? Can anyone tell me what a good quality polish looks like?

Yes they need to have a v comb, anything else is a DQ

Here's the offender after a quick shampoo. He was not very happy about it. If anyone would have told me years ago, that I would be sitting here shampooing and blow drying a chicken, I would have told them they were nuts. lol. He's panting a bit in one pic ... stress and probably the blow dryer. I had it on the coolest setting.

He is so beautiful!!!! As he gets older his crest will grow longer and be more of a pain but he is worth it! He has such nice dark coloring and that's great for blues! I didn't hatch one frizzle blue male this year so your lucky! I hatched a few pullets but no cocks. I think he misses his family and wants to come "home" LOL
I know what you mean about you never thought you would be doing that years ago. When we bathe before shows I think that too. And I'm positive all my friends think I'm nuts. Lol

I got a very pretty girl yesterday. I have a lot of babies, won't be sure of the sex for a while,, but I know this one is a girl..and a sweet one at that!


Fun to watch. She is pretty close to laying. I hear the eggs
are usually a cream, or white color? My first grown up Polish.

My polish girls lays a small cream colored egg. I expected white because that is what I had read they lay, but it's a cream color.

I have standard Polish so I follow the website and saw this "COMB: V-shaped-very small,the smaller the better,resting on front of crest,each side level,preference to be given to birds without any comb".

Now I am confused, lol! I have a Polish that is around 23 weeks old and no sign of a V comb as of yet. So your saying that is an automatic DQ? Thanks again for all the pointers!

This is Fibonacci aka. Fibs. This was taken several weeks ago and his top hat has filled out more. Also he normally does not hold his wings like this, it was just a really hot day when the pics were taken. Does he have to much black in the front?

Sorry No I meant that any other shape of comb, (straight, rose, etc.) You are right. The APA Standard says basically the same thing. "V-shaped, of small size, the smaller the better, set evenly on head, retreating into crest, natural absence of comb prefered. If you have a V comb with sprigs that is a DQ. Sorry about that. I was totally not clear in what I was trying to say before.
