I have two girls, don't I?

Here are my two TSC ducklings. They are approximately 7 weeks old now and both feathered in the same color, no green head or anything. One is bigger than the other, and the bigger one is a little nicer too, but they are very close in color. Here they are:

This was taken just a few days ago. As far as they will let me look, they appear to be fully feathered. They don't care for being picked up though they love to jump in my shower and hog the water the moment they hear the faucet go on! You haven't taken a real shower til you've had ducks nibbling at your toes while you have a head full of soap!

If these are mallards, wich they look like it to me, they take longer to color in. You might have males or females, its hard to tell right now.. time will tell

I couldn't tell with my ducks until they were older than this. My Khaki Campbell might have been 3 or 4 months before he got his colors. Cute little babies though!

Took me about 3 months to see that what I thought was a mallard was indeed a rouen. And my khakis that I thought were female, turned male at about 3 months with those green heads. They will most likely molt again and their feathers can change drastically. Listen to their quacks, that may really tell you what they are!

Those are mallards same age as my babies...There is NO way to tell they are too young My last year mallards took forever to get green heads one changed so I thooght the other was a girl than a week or two later the other green head popped out of no where I had 2 drakes....I have 6 new ones, I can only make a guess they are starting to quack so I now some are girls but 1 I have I know is a boy he sounds just like my drake..But then again its only guessing!

That's what I thought too, but I kept hearing that no, the green heads appear with the first feathers. I am pretty sure I have a hen and a drake, cause one is loud and mean, she likes to nip, though it never really hurts, and the bigger one is more mellow and quiet. I think that one is a drake. Glad to know they DO go through a molt before their true coloring comes in. Now, only about two more months before I know what I have...

Drakes usually start off with female feathers. It's called a 'phase' or something. Their first molt will be when their colors start popping in.

I've had mallards.

Listen for quacks, or a raspy peep. Quack is a female, raspy sore throat voice is a male.
