I Haz Fluffy Butts!!!!!! :) :)

I would swap out... the new babies need at least 95F-100F to start once they get moving around they can handle getting a little cooler to 90F but first week is always 95F for healthy chicks.

OK, so I took your advice and swapped in the 250 Watt MONSTER heat lamp. I got the brooder up to 98 degrees, and the heat lamp is at a much safer distance from the bedding.

The chicks seem to be moving a bit more happily too.

I still have one chicken chick that isn't doing well. He did make a loose, pink (watered down blood) poop. I don't know what that's about but I'm sure somebody will chime in.....

Dunno about the chick..

Make sure you only have a area at 98F.... they need cool place to get out of the heat as they start to grow feathers and adjust to needing less heat.

you might want to get a range of wattage bulbs. for my brooder I have the light fixed in 1 place and just change out bulbs every week.
100W>75W>60W>40W> etc till they take day time temps. then light off during day and on at night to maintain that day time temp then slowly adjust the night light hours (I use a timer) down a 1hr every couple/few days. This all depends on the temps/locations the brooder is in so everyone is unique but the idea is the same. reduce 5 degrees each week for 3 weeks then start dropping based on feathering and temps.

Just watch for "Piling" where they pig pile and climb on/under everyone to get warm. or they spread out and pant with wings splayed when they are too hot.

I adjust down when they no longer sleep under the light but outside the light and watch if the pile.. if they sleep under the light without piling then all is well.

I put the monster 250 watt heat lamp in there and got the temps to 95. TOO HOT for them. Laying flat, panting.....

Went back to the smaller 120 watt red heat lamp and they are happily cheeping and running around. When they do settle, I get a little piling once in a while. Most of the time they lay next to each other with a hint of space between them....

I cover the brooder at night with towels (carefully avoiding the reflector of the lamp) which seems to keep them happy when we turn the heat down at night (I can't sleep if too hot).... The temp stays at around 85-90 when I do this. Probably cuts down the drafts too.....

Six more Coturnix hatched while I was at work!!!

I thought I had another three days, but I guess not!!!

The all seem to be doing fine. I left them in the turner with the turner running and had no ill effects! By the time I noticed them, they were fully dry and moving around!

So for those of you who want to know if you need to remove the turner during lockdown....Nope.

So out of 7 eggs, I got six live hatches in this hatching batch! The seventh pipped, zipped a little and died.

Dunno what happened there, but it happens I guess.....
