My daughter and I put a couple of ceramic eggs in the empty nests to try and encourage laying there, instead of crowding in to the nest with a setting hen. One is gone. I sure hope that whatever critter stole it hurt itself when it tried to eat it!
I'm both angry that there is a thief and amused thinking about trying to crack or bite the egg.
. :gig

Question unrelated to egg laying....I rescued a chick (6 weeks old) and I would like to put her out with my adult hens (in her own cage until she's old enough to defend herself) but my question is can a six week old chick stay outside in an insulated coop when the nights are getting down to 45 degrees?

Unless it was some type of mammal that nudged the egg out of the nest, it may have been a snake.
Wildlife live in our midst. They don't comprehend your property line.
I found shells outside of the pen last week. I'm assuming mammal. Snakes would eat shell and all.

You should make your own thread for this question.
