I just became a mother! (new babies!)

Today there were still two birds in the nest. Well. In the basket. One in the nest, one sitting in the plant.

As I was out there taking pictures, it jumped out of the nest and flew away. And it flew really well and the daddy bird came flying off the roof to follow it and they flew together into a tree in my neighbors yard! Then they flew here and there while I was out there watching. It was perfect! I can't believe I got to even be there to see it fly out of the nest.

There is still one bird left. Apparently a late bloomer. I expect it either went tonight after I came in or will go tomorrow.

There are still 4-6 adult birds hanging around and throwing a fit every time I go outside. 2-3 pairs of male/female house finches. I didn't realize that they protected the babies in groups.

I did go buy replacement hanging baskets today. They were on sale at home depot for $3.33 so I bought 6 new ones to replace these as the birds fly away. Hopefully birds won't nest in the new ones while they are waiting to be switched out.

The nest in the garage for the Carolina Wren still has 5 eggs, so I am going to leave it alone for a week or so. I'll start checking in a week or week and a half, to see if there are babies!

The other nest in the other hanging basket is still empty.....but has obviously had some work done since yesterday....one of these days there will be an egg in there for me!

Great pics! Thanks for sharing!

We have a big wooden porch and under it is a bird's nest; it's right under a crack so we can look in at the eggs without disturbing them. One time I was looking down at them and the mother flew in! LOL I think she suspected me though because she looked up and then flew away.

But they haven't hatched yet. There are 5 eggs in the nest.

I can't remember what type of bird it is, but it is fairly small, with a tint of gray-green on its chest, and it's body is dark gray colored. It's head has a slight crown that raised(like a Blue Jay) and when it is moving around, it's tail twitches up and down. To hunt, it often swoops down and catches insects(like moths)

Any ideas?

Just thinking that the wrens and such have gotten so used to you, your photography, being made to feel welcome, I think next spring your porch maybe a big family wren reunion area

Not sure which smiley applies.

77horses, does it have a big poppy eye (like a silver spangled hamburg or a silkie roo ?

) if so it is a tufted titmouse. I have crickets in a container outside and it frequently raids the container.

Prepare yourselves! I looked out this morning and the last baby was still in the nest. I have been working on the chicken coop all morning and could see and hear all the adult finches flying and hanging around the porch....came in for lunch and it was in the plant. I took a pic through the front window (I love that I can see the nest from where I sit on the couch using my laptop).

Then I went out on the porch and as I walked over it jumped out of the nest and flew away! So exciting! I think it just needed a little "push" out of the nest. The adults were acting like they were trying to convince it out earlier, so now I feel as though I have done my "motherly" duty. It flew just as well as the one yesterday so it should be fine.

Which leaves..........

....an empty nest!

I bought 6 replacements last night so I will give it a few days to make sure they aren't going to come back or use the nest for anything, then I will replace it with a new one.

I am not checking the garage nest since it shouldn't be due to hatch for another week or two.......the other nest on in the other hanging basket is still empty.

Exciting day!

I had a nest in my garage last year...oh boy! One morning I stepped into the garage with 5 of them bouncing off the walls ~ they could not figure out how to fly out. Took a while, but I finally hearded them towards the door.

My garage is not really a garage....more like a very large shed. It is detached and about 50 feet down the hill from my house. It has an opening where a garage door used to be on one side that is now just an OPEN entrance....the shed is split in half, one half open to the outside (it was made that way to allow for a horse to use as shelter on that side and hay storange on the other)....the other side has a regular house door that is kept shut to keep it "closed". However, the dividing wall is only about 8 feet tall? With about 6 feet of open space up to the actual roof. So birds can easily fly in and out. Small birds can also fly up to the edge of the roof and there is a gap to go in and out. They shouldn't have any trouble getting out once they can fly. But they have about a month to go there! Gotta hatch first!

Congrats on the empty nest. It's nice to see a thread on BYC where decreasing numbers of hatchlings is a good thing!

Okay, i need to put up a sign. STOP NESTING HERE.

I noticed another male finch hanging around. A lot. Hanging off the baskets, driving my cat crazy.

I thought maybe one of the babies came back to the nest but it was empty. Hmmmmm. When I pulled all the baskets down to water, there is a new nest in ANOTHER plant.

The other nest in the OTHER basket is still empty and unused. Haven't checked the nest in the garage yet. Still have another week or so. But this makes 4 of my 6 baskets that have birds trying them out. One had an aborted attempt at a nest and two have currently empty nests, and the 1 that had the 4 babies that is now empty (and got pulled down to be replaced tomorrow).

I bought replacement baskets, which are all sitting on my back deck. Two of them have smashed areas where birds have been testing them out.

DO I HAVE BIRD NESTING PHEROMONES OR SOMETHING?
