I just became a mother! (new babies!)

Probably not

You just don't bother the birdies while they're settling in

We have a bunch of nests right now... In the coop, in our porch directly next to our bedroom, in the barn, in the side of the coop
barnie.gif

Mostly barn swallows, which are excellent bug catchers, so they're welcome! Last night I helped a really cute little finch... He just perched right on my finger and waited for me to find a good safe place for him to spend the night. He was gone this morning, so all is well

These little guys are so cute, they find the funniest places to nest!

Well, the Carolina Wren nest in the garage was hit by marauders......snakes? rats? I have no idea. But the eggs have all disappeared (1 left last time I checked a few days ago) one by one. And the parents stopped visiting as well.

The other nest on the front porch basket has remained empty and does not look quite finished. It is a nest but just doesn't look like it has been touched lately.

So those two nests are NO GOs.

However, as things seem to go around here. I have two NEW nests in two of my OTHER hanging baskets.

One House Finch, one Carolina Wren.

And they both have eggs! As of today there are 2 in the house finch nest and 1 in the Carolina Wren nest.

It's a good thing I bought those replacement baskets! I replaced the one that had the last nest and baby birds....the other replacements are on the back deck for now. Guess I will need them after all! I might have to start just buying replacement plants and replanting the empty baskets. I have 14 tan baskets and 6 white at this point...which includes 7 that have 'dead' plants.

I think you should consider switching to artificial flowers from March to October. It seems a shame to kill such pretty petunias. L.

If I switched to artifical from March to October....I would have no flowers year round! Too cold from October to March......

I am going to start replanting the "ruined" baskets from here on out. And I am going to try to continue to water these even with the nests. I just have to pull them down, water slowly and hope for the best.

I love my little birds!

Well, I ended up with 4 eggs in the House Finch nest and 5 in the Carolina Wren nest. However, I'm pretty sure the Carolina Wren nest has been abandoned.

Haven't seen them around in ages.

The house finch nest is doing well. That momma bird is around almost every time I go out (which is not often, my front porch is not used much).

They are due to hatch and this morning......one of them has pipped!

Hard to tell in the pics, but the dark spot is a hole in the egg. I can see the baby bird moving underneath.

Babies!!

Nope, I've seen a tufted titmouse before but that's not what it is.
idunno.gif
It's darker and doesn't have as big a crest(or crown) on its head. It can just raise the feathers on its head a little. I know what it is but just can't remember the name!

LOL I hate it when I know something but can't remember it!

The eggs were white with brown specks, and there were 5. One must have fallen out of the nest though so 4 chicks hatched. They were fairly small and had yellow on their beaks. Both the mother and father would sit on tree branches, bike handles, etc. and they would swoop down and catch moths, flies, bees, etc. and carry them to the nest to feed the chicks. Luckily for me, I could look right through the crack on the porch and watch the parents feed the chicks. I got to watch them get bigger and bigger and finally, last week when I looked into the nest, the chicks were all feathered. One looked up at me and stared for a moment, then flew away. Then the rest followed. That was the last time I saw them. Kinda sad to see the empty nest, but I was glad to have the opportunity to watch them hatch, grow, develop, and fly away.

But anyway, the bird is similar to a titmouse in size, but is dark brown colored with a green tint on its chest when you look at it up close. It kinda like twitches of moves its tail when it's sitting on a branch, the nest it builds is made of twigs, dog hair, and other thin pieces of stuff. It usually builds its nest in sheds, under porches, etc. Like one time I saw this same type of bird at our friend's house and it had made a nest under their tree house.

Any ideas?

Took this pic a few hours ago, will recheck in the morning.

It was pushing its way out while I was watching it.....yay babies! The cycle starts again! My neighbor has a bird waterer and I added two new bird feeders, so the parents should be all set....

I was getting a little worried as the little baby was still half in the shell this morning, over 12 hours since my last pic was taken. But I kept my hands off and rechecked this afternoon and it is out!

Feeeeed meeeeeee.....

newnest1baby.jpg

I do not see any cracks or holes in the other eggs. Will recheck tomorrow. I did refill the bird feeders today so the parents will have some good eats for the babies
