Im sure the fat will be fine in small doses. The one I made this morning probably had about 2 tablespoons of the hard cold fat and the total thing was about 2 cups worth of cheerios and oatmeal, so thats really not that much, and about 8 chickens split mine. Im guessing maybe once a week, or just whenever I have leftover grease I guess I will use it rather than throw it out.

no!..i appreciate the recipe!...i'm thinking of making something similiar..and just freezing the blocks to give them during the winter...i figure if i do it every couple of weeks..it wont be to much of a hassle to toss together and throw in the freezer...but i just worry about how much fat is safe for them??...thanks again..

I always heard that all birds need more fat in cold weather. Holds them over I guess.

okay..sounds good to me!...now..can ducks eat it?..the questions never end with me...lol...

freezing it is a good idea. I think i will make sort of a big 'chex mix' if you will, and freeze a big bag of it, then the fat wont go bad, and it will always be handy to throw out for a treat. Plus in the crumbly form, I dont think you would have to worry about giving them too much fat because theres not enough to hold it all together, just enough to coat it all.

i make these little meals for my parrot.. whole wheat pasta, brown rice(cooked), mixed bag of dried beans(cooked), mixed veggies,,etc...and i freeze them up for him, in little sandwich baggies...its real easy to just grab one out of the freezer and feed him......i'm thinking of adding some of the things i use in my parrot mix also....only with the fat and oatmeal to help hold it together..i'll also add the bird seed..maybe some peanut butter...

In our case, we cook for the parrots and the Delightful Dozen are the cleanup crew. The chickens are much less picky than the parrots and certainly show their appreciation more than the "indoor" birds! LOL
