I just committed myself to BIG $$$ expenditure....

Same here, Bluey! I can't even imagine paying a gas bill again! Average cost of good, used wood stove in these parts: $300 regular stove, $1200 for wood furnace.

Since I don't have my own place for getting wood, I was able to buy "seconds" lumber bundles for $20 a piece. Four bundles took us through the winter and, since I already owned the stove, I heated the house for $80 and the gas to pick up the wood.

That is why I love my wood heat!

That's still a very sweet deal! Our property is adjacent to my father-in-law's 120 acres. We only cut up what is dead or laying on the ground. The only cost is our toil and sweat. Child labor helps alot as well (in carrying and stacking wood)...

We're stuck on propane out here, and the bills hurt. We're getting nailed with roughly $800 every 2 months during the cold seasons. I'm sure our furnace isn't helping either. They picked the absolute cheapest model to put into this place and we've had numerous problems with it. Wish we could do what you just did (even if it is nerve-wracking!). Congrats!

ETA, if my husband wasn't asthmatic and deathly allergic to smoke from wood fires (literally), I would so gladly have a wood burning stove.
