I just don't understand my peers at all...

Great job girls!!

My daughter gets the same thing, she's only 14 but has been babysitting since she was 12. If she doesn't have any money for the movies, she doesn't go - and yeah, her friend are aghast that Mommy doesn't just give her money!

I was the same way. I had my first job waitressing at a small restaurant making 3.40 an hour plus tips during the summer and on the weekends when I was 13. When I was 16, I had 2 jobs during the summer and 1 job during the school year. I saved my money and had to have a certain amount in the bank for emergencies. One year I gave my parents $1000 towards a solid wood floor. I loved to work. When I was in college, I'd work during the day and take night classes.

I miss those days. I can't work anymore because I broke my neck 3 years ago and I live in constant pain. I can't walk very far either. Luckily, I married a wonderful husband who takes care of me and my children. My oldest is 17. She has a job, but blows her money quickly on shoes and clothes. I'm having a difficult time teaching her how to save her money.

I think it's great your out there working. I didn't have a choice, my parents didn't have a lot of money to pass on to us kids. My brother also worked. We paid for our own cars, gas, and car repairs.

Example of a conversation between me and a peer:

Peer: You meen your parents make you do CHORES!?!?!
Me: No, I choose to do them. I don't want to be a total idoit when I move out ya know
Peer: But, But, WHY would you WANT to do something like that?!?!
Me: Because they won't be there forever to baby me and hand my life to me on a silver platter.
Peer:

Here's another conversation(Different friend):
Friend: My parents offer me pocket money for chores, but I can't be bothered to do them.
Me: So you don't do anything to help out?
Friend: No. You do a lot of work, how much do you get paid?
Me: Nothing.
Friend:

i can't work now because of a car wreck and it leaves me in constant pain too. like you I miss the independence of being able to do things like that for myself. there is real pride in accomplishing things for yourself and knowing you don't have to rely on someone to take care of yourself.

you do get paid though. You get paid in experience, an education on taking care of yourself, and a sense of self worth, and by helping your parents you give your family more time to spend together, and the good sense of a job well done

Yeah, I guess I shouldve said that. Oh well.

Sometimes my Dad gives me money if im going to be with friends and stuff. Well I earn that money by working but when I need it he gives it to me. And most of the money I have is from working.

See... yall are proof that there's still good, responsible kids out there that are learning what the "real" world is... not this "fantasy" world that is being taught to a lot of kids in school...
