I just got Americans....

They are normal chicks. Some differences that you may notice is that they tend to be flightier than other breeds. My full grown EE hen was very flighty as a chick, but is much more comfortable around people as an adult. She still does not like to be touched or picked up. The chicks I have now squawk like the dickens when I pick them up to clean their pens. Much more than the barred rock chick that is in with them.

Yeah I got 9 americana chicks and I did notice they don't like me picking them up... but they are so cute so I pick them up anyway. I can't wait until they start laying the blue eggs!!!

Mine are prolific layers. No real special needs compared other chickens that I can think of. I bred a handful with golden comets last summer and now have amazing beautiful green egg layers. I would say they can out lay a comet which is no slouch.

Not recommended for any sort of intended meat use. They are tough, thin, and very lean.

As said mine are not very social with people. But I did not bond with them when they were new hatched like i usually do my future laying hens. So I always assumed it was partially my fault.

Great Breed for eggs. Although we had to buy eggs for Easter this year, cause even though my hens produce many dozens a week, they were all already colored and my kids didn't like the idea of pre-colored eggs.

I have 8 ameracaunas, 6 are 7 weeks old and 2 are 6 weeks old. My brooder was 'top access' so they became very flighty when I'd open the top and reach from above them.

Once I moved them to the coop at 5 and 6 weeks, they've settled down tremendously when I come in. I have one that will give me time to get settled in and then be up in my lap

2 that will be all nonchalant acting but mosey over to me, 3 that are totally apathetic and the other 2 run screaming.......LOL

there are a couple of ameracauna threads that are strictly about the breed that can be very helpful. here's the one that's most active.....

I've had them before, there's nothing 'special' or 'different' you have to do for them vs any other breed.

I've never owned an Ameraucana, just wanted to add that there is no such thing as an Americana. Easter Eggers are mistakenly called Americanas, a mispelling of "Ameraucana", because Easter Eggers often look like Ameraucanas, which are an actual breed. Easter Eggers are pretty much the mutts of the chicken world, and the only requirement is that they lay blue/green eggs.

Learn more about Ameraucanas here:

And if you have Easter Eggers, check here:

You probably have Easter Eggers. I hear they are lovely. They don't require anything special. Enjoy them!

I read Americanas are a breed they only lay bluish eggs and easter eggers are mutts and lay all kinds of colors of eggs and then there are Aracanas which were the original breed that like the Americanas lay only bluish eggs. Mine are Americanas i got them from a special breeder who breeds pure Americanas.

There is no such bird as an "Americana" :yiipchick

If they were sold to you as such, you have Easter Eggers :)
