I just got my cayuga ducklings but I already want to get rid of one!

The Duck ABC's :

Whatever feathered friend you will get in 5 weeks will bond with the duck and not you! Having a duckling without a body is mental torture to the duckling. You should have done your homework before buying or you would have known better. I hope you are not raising the duckling indoors or you will get your stinky fly infested surprise in about 2 weeks. Diapers are only made to be worn for max of 4 hours per day, so don't think they will be an answer. Make sure you are giving it the right food and supplements or you will end up with deficiencies that can be deadly or deforming. I let you research that on your own. Ok, two hints niacin and angel wing. Both are preventable and have to be put in consideration when you are getting ducklings.

I was aware it would bond to the duck, i wanted the one i have right now to be the one that is close to me and then get the other one for it, not me. I promise I DID do my homework in large proportions, which is why I even considered only keeping one for a short time since they bond closer. The diapers are only for when it is on carpet or in cars and I haven't even used them yet. I am giving it chick mash and just gave them some cabbage as a treat which they loved. The ducklings are indoors for now in their brooder because it would defeat the purpose of having a heat lamp if they are outside in the cold. I know about niacin and angel wing, I won't be giving too much extra protein for that reason.

I feel really bad. I now really want to keep both so they dont cry for each other but I already promised my cousin one.

Maybe you can convince your cousin that for the sake of the ducklings it's best to keep them together. I have an only duckling right now, but she does have adult ducklings that she hangs out with too. Yours nor your cousins will have that.

I agree

kikidee,

I think you and your cousin are probably animal lovers, and want what's best for the ducklings. You can see that a number of us are very concerned about single ducklings. If you share that concern with your cousin you can come up with a plan that is good for you, your cousin, and any ducklings you raise.

I told her I was thinking of keeping mine and she didn't seem very unhappy with that decision. So I am probably going to keep both. They both warmed up to me now and lay on me and follow me

Thanks for the help everyone!

Isn't it sweet when they cuddle up to you? How about the sound of those little webbed feet patting around? Enjoy those babies. And by the way - they may go through a stage when they act like they're scared of you. It's a developmental stage and you can get through it with patience and treats.

Yes I love their little voices and their leather shoes! (they look like leather to me since their feet are all black, haha) I am happy I am keeping both :) Just being with them brings me daily joy and I can't wait to see them grow up!
