I just have to ask...(don't be mad meat people!)

I love animals as much as anyone else does, as I'm sure everyone on this forum does. Couldnt imagine anyone keeping chickens if they hated them lol.

I was raised in the country and learned young that wild game and fowl were an important food source for us. Some of my fondest early memories are of watching my dad, grampa and uncles bundle up in their blaze orange clothing and head into the wood for the deer opener. I remember when I was about 7, I said "I can't wait till I'm old enough to go with them." Everyone thought I was nuts in my family, saying girls dont hunt.

Well, 2 years later I started hunting squirrels, then rabbits and pheasants. I saved money for 2 years and bought a redbone coonhound and then hunted coon. I trapped coyotes, fox, coon, muskrats, mink and possum. I dont hunt very much anymore, but I do still spend 4 months a year trapping everyday. I was blessed to find a husband that traps as well, as it is a bit of a dying breed.

I haven't raised any broilers yet, but I do eat my extras roos. Guess I just never thought nothing about it, just know they're good food lol.

Go-Veggie, I was wondering, you don't eat chickens, do you eat eggs?? If you don't, what prompts you to keep chickens? Just curious.

Thanks kodiakchicken! You know, that particular post I read right before starting my post was pretty awful. The person was all excited about doing it for the first time, even though they did express how hard it was to get through. The details of tying it up and hanging it upside down and death not coming right away and having to try something else...it's like, come on...do you really want that out there? That might not be something to go on and on about. I don't know, it was just horrifying picturing this bird who trusts you like family-of course they aren't going to fight you as you tie it's legs and wings up...they trust you and by tying them up, they are powerless. Oh, here I go...sorry...it was just super sad. Thanks to those of you who understand I am not putting down meat eating or anything, I just hate how much pain humans inflict on animals...it breaks my heart to think about it sometimes.

yotetrapper...thanks 4 asking... I do eat eggs. I am not a vegan, so I do eat dairy products, but I really can't eat anything with fur or feathers. I'm really funny about trying not to eat fertilized eggs either, which is partly why I am raising my own.

I'm sure if I'd have grown up on a farm and seen everything as a kid, I would not be as sensitive as I am to it today. I just look at it like we are all different and that's what makes life interesting.

I'm not sure but I think what she may have meant are the titles on the home page - the newest postings - section categories such as "Meat Birds" are not shown there. And not every grizzly post about chicken killing is in the Meat Birds section. To avoid most of it, one can refrain from clicking on home page threads and go to the index first and select "safer" sections from there......

go-veggie, I had the same reaction to that thread about the upside down killing that went slow, didn't work quite right - that poor bird. Just awful.

I am a total failure as a farmer. Not only could I not eat one of my own animals, I can't even eat the eggs from my chickens! Mine come from the A&P. My husband will eat them and I cook with them but to see them on my plate......just can't do it. Makes me squeemish. Weird, I know.

ive never understood how someone could raise an animal, name it, care for it so well,,,, and then kill it and eat it....

but, i realize that those birds/animals have a much better life - short as it is- than the ones raised at commercial places.

im not one to ever kill any of my animals, i have trouble culling too... i usually just give them away, and then dont want to know what happens to them.

however,, this might sound bad,, but i would eat someone eles hand raised chicken.. they are very good for you to eat, and yummy tasting. i just wont ever eat anything that has looked at me, or that i have raised.

and yes, i stay away from the posts about killing the chickens and stuff... it sometimes tears me up..

I can totally understand your viewpoint. I often vacillate whether or not I should go veggie and I do have veggie "holidays". Then I remember that I have this dentition for a reason and that, honestly, meat tastes good IMO. I personally do not have a problem with processing my own birds or eating my own eggs. I guess I know that I have given my birds a happy and healthy life which is much nicer that what my average grocer's chicken went through.

The key is in not naming it. Our ewe lambs get names..faith, hope, mercy, etc were this years ewe lambs. Our ram lambs are named lambchop1, lambchop2, etc.

You learn to seperate in your mind and your heart those that are going to stay on the farm as pets/production animals..and those that are going in the freezer.

I understand how hard it is to kill and eat something youve raised..but if your eating chicken from the grocery store then you are 1. supporting the unhealthy raising of chickens in tyson type facilities and believe me their living conditions are horrific. And 2. if the birds you are giving away are going for food then you cant be *sure* that they are being humanely butchered if your not doing it yourself.

I feel that if i raise a meat type animal...its my responsibility to insure that it has a good life and a humane death.

If it is upsetting to you, I would just stick to going through each section individually. Instead of using the most recent post method.

The very first thing I did when I joined the group was read down the list of sections. When I read "Meat Birds ETC" I knew immediately what it was.

Also, if you know you are sensitive to certain topics, you would have left the thread you were using as an example, instead of reading through the whole thing. It I stumble into a topic I don't like, I usually know within the first sentence or two, and I leave. I don't finish reading the whole post and then complain about it. I know which thread you read "right before posting this thread" and I know that if it sickened you that much, you could have left before the actually killing.

I think this thread is only going to upset someone. Especially if you make your "examples" so vivid, that anyone who read that thread would know who you are referring to. I understand that the thread upset you, but please be careful about "targeting" other members and using them as an example.
