And there was no egg in the coop? Yesterday she laid her first egg at about this time. Do they sing before they lay the egg? She is back in the nesting box now and I hope that is what she is doing?

the day after my hens laid their first egg i heard the egg song,... ran in when she left and found nothing... I figured she *thought* she laid an egg?! I've had several do it the past week (they have been starting to lay for about a week and a half) maybe it's because their just starting,... or do we have mental chickens?

Now I am going to leave her alone and keep my fingers crossed. I will check again when she comes out. Fingers crossed!

One of my chickens did the egg song (for about 30 seconds) a week before she laid an egg. Then I have only heard her do it once since then. I haven't heard it at all from the other two that are already laying.

The true reason they sing the egg song is because in the wild when a chicken stops to lay her egg, the rest of the flock keeps going. When she is done, she will cluck loudly (the egg song) and the rooster crows in the response so she can find the flock. So sometimes the egg song has nothing to do with eggs.

It also can mean there is a predator and they are warning one another or are scared.
