I just heard the "egg song" for the first time today!!

The egg song is just a hens way of saying..."something happened". I have a gal who sings the egg song whenever there is a tussle in the coop in progress, a hawk in the yard, the dog is being naughty, an egg, and so on. Just saying hey, come here! lol She is the chattiest bird ever

Yup, I love the Egg Song. The first stanza goes like this:

Bok bok bok bok bokbokbokbokbok buh-GAWK!
Bok bok bok bok bok bok bok buh-GAWK
Bok bok bok bok bokbokbokbokbok buh-GAWK!
BOK BOK BOK BOK bokbokbokbokbok BUH-GAWWWK!

And the next few stanzas are eggs-zactly the same.

Trust me, there are posts and threads about THE EGG SONG all over BYC.

And yes, some pullets do practice it before laying.

Some flocks join in a chorus of congratulations, too.

It's particularly cute when the rooster(s) sing it with 'em.

I've heard the egg song a couple times. I wasn't in the yard either time that it happened so I don't know who did it. Both times happened around the same time as my one girl, Meenie, first started doing the squat thing. She's still the only one who squats, and I'm fairly sure she's the one that now lays. But no more egg songs.

I heard one of my girls doing the egg song long before anybody laid an egg, and being the new chicken mom that I am, I thought something was wrong out there in the chicken yard when I heard all this "bok bok boking"! So there I am, running outside to make sure nothing was attacking my babies, and there is one of the girls "bok bok boking" all over the place at something in the yard. LOL Terrified me at first to hear this calling! So I was greatly relieved to see that it was just a curious chicken looking at something thru the fence.
